Reshaping Web Site Design

Retailers architect new ways to design features and functions that deliver improved business results

With a new treatment or a major feature going live every three weeks, there’s no room for complacency in VistaPrint Ltd.’s approach to web site design. Instead of speculating over how visitors might respond to a new application, VistaPrint, an online retailer of custom printing products, uses step-by-step planning and rigorous testing to design web pages that meet customer expectations and generate more business.

When VistaPrint recently updated its design gallery of templates that customers use to create personalized business cards and stationery, designers and marketing managers analyzed thousands of transactions and visitor sessions. VistaPrint then used the new analysis to design and launch a new gallery that has since helped the company acquire 4.5 million more customers overall and nearly double daily orders to about 33,000.

“We don’t guess at what our customers want out of a new design,” says VistaPrint senior director of user experience Jeff Prus. “We study their behavior and then design and test a new treatment that’s going to meet their expectations and ours.”

Tips to Locating Budget Web Hosting Easily Online

Budget Web hosting means any type of hosting service that is available at very low cost which is an affordable web hosting service that can be easily utilized by most of the people who want to create their own website or for people who are creating websites for the first time. In other words it can be said that budget web hosting is a kind of cheap web hosting plan which is offered by the hosting companies for those people who are entering into online business as newbie so at that moment they do not require special features or bandwidth or large disk space.

Operational Method of Budget Web Hosting

This type of low-cost web hosting plan is mostly available for a period of one year and this is quite suitable for new businessmen as they can easily create their own websites for displaying their product online and get enough time to develop the proper marketing process for their product so that they can easily establish their new business. The strategy that is utilized by the web hosting companies for charging the monthly fees for budget web hosting is very simple. The website owner has to divide the annual fees quoted by the company by twelve to obtain the total amount of monthly fees that has to be paid to the company for availing their services.

As a newbie it is beneficial to avail the services of the web hosting companies which have this facility as it will help the new website owner to put aside some of the basic worries of the technical issues like setting up their own server, monitoring the whole working process and other issues related to the server and several other issues which are connected with setting up the server for a new site. This will help the site owner to pay more attention towards his business or towards the development of the site along with proper uptime at a very nominal cost.

Choosing Budget Web Hosting Company

If you want to start your own website or want to create a new website for your company then it is necessary to chalk out a plan about your requirements so that while choosing the website company you can easily verify whether they are providing you all the facilities that is required by you for creating your website and if they have the facility for further development whenever you may need at a later stage. You should also verify whether the web hosting company has put up proper contact information like e-mail address, phone number or contact address.

If the company has not provided proper contact address then the services of that company should not be purchased as it'll create a lot of problems later on for you will not have any type of contact information if you develop any problem while setting up your website so you will not be able to avail their services. The web hosting company should also have the facility of providing their customers with a phone number that is toll-free so that all the people who are setting up their websites from different places of the world can contact them easily.

The other important things that has to be kept in mind while choosing an affordable web hosting company who is providing the facility of budget web hosting is to evaluate about the web hosting company's credentials. This can be easily done by evaluating the front page that is available when you visit the site of the web hosting company. By the help of this page you can easily evaluate whether the web hosting company is professional or not or are just offering their services as low-cost web hosting so that they can draw in more customers.

Verification about Other Offers by the Budget Web Hosting Company

As the website owner you have to verify other areas besides the financial matter while purchasing the services of budget web hosting company because getting the facility of low cost web hosting is not enough if you do not get the basic services that should be offered by the web hosting company irrespective of the fact which type of web hosting facility you are availing. The things that you have to primarily verify are the uptime that is provided by the company because it is very important that you should get maximum amount of uptime for inflow of good traffic.

Uptimes is of utmost necessity as it is the time when the company server is open or live which means that people will be able to visit your website as your site pages can be easily accessed by the visitors. The after sales service of the web hosting company is also very important as you will require market tools and free scripts and other supports for setting up your website and running it smoothly.

Microsoft Targets Adobe in Web-Design Software

Adobe Systems Inc. is facing increasing pressure from Microsoft Corp., which is using its deep pockets to challenge Adobe's dominance of Web design software.

Adobe's Flash software, which adds video and animation to Web sites, is at the heart of many popular Internet destinations. Retailers, media outlets and entertainment sites rely on Flash to make their sites interactive and to serve up advertisements.

But Microsoft has recently launched a new version of its competing Silverlight technology and has been aggressively courting the operators of popular Web sites and advertising agencies that are Adobe's core customers.

Netflix Inc. recently said it would use Silverlight to stream movies over the Internet. When CBS Corp.'s college sports group decided to build its Web site using Silverlight earlier this year, Microsoft chipped in free development and support that "reduced our costs tremendously," said Tom Buffolano, the CBS business unit's former chief. A CBS spokesman declined to comment.

Winning the war with Microsoft "is clearly the most important priority," said Adobe Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen.

Tips for Switching Web Hosts

It is quite common to switch from one web host to another. This may be necessary if your site grows to popularity and your current host can no longer meet its requirements. Perhaps they do not have enough storage space or bandwidth to support your content and traffic. Maybe you want to start another business but the current provider only allows you to host a single domain. Or maybe you found a company that is much more affordable. Whatever the case, before moving your content to another host, it important to plan ahead to make the transition as smooth as possible.

The first part of your plan, is to of course, find a new provider. After finding a web host that can support the needs of your new and improved site, the next thing you should do is backup the current content so that it can be transferred to the new server. Although you may want to change the look and feel of your site, a lot of your content may still be relevant so backing it up is critical.

After moving to the new host, it’s a good rule of thumb to use a redirect page from your old site to automatically forward visitors the new one. By doing this you can assure that your visitors can still access your site even if the IP address has not yet propagated over, something that will help to prevent the possible loss of sales. You should use this format for the first 48 hours following the move as it usually takes about that long for a new website to be listed on most domain servers over the web.

Here are a few more recommendations that will make your transition to a new host quick and easy:

  • Inquire within the new web hosting company to learn if they’re running on the Windows or Linux platform. This is very critical as incompatibility may cause problems when moving from the old host.
  • Find out approximately how much storage you’ll need for the files and content on your current website. Make sure the new host has enough space to support the further growth and development of your site.
  • Check to see how much bandwidth the new host offers. If your site has grown significantly, bandwidth is critical as your site can endure serious performance issues without enough of it.
  • Make sure the new host offers the same features you had before. In most cases, you’ll be looking for even more features. For instance, if your current site was published with Frontpage extensions, finding a new host with this feature will make creating your new website much easier.
  • Find out if the new provider uses a shared or dedicated server. While shared web hosting plans are pretty reliable, they are more likely to experience server issues due to the number of sites being hosted.
  • Lastly, look for reviews and customer feedback about the new hosting company before signing up. This will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Web Hosting Tips and Ideas

People who want to have a website, blog etc. will need a web hosting organization which provides an Internet storage facility. If you want others to see your website you will need one of these and depending on whether it is a commercial site or not will dictate how much you pay but it is possible to have this at no charge (with restrictions).

Many beginners start by using the free hosting services that are provided by many internet service companies; while they will have access to email facilities, basic websites and blogs, they will have to pay for a full service provider. However, if you're planning to expand you should shift to a paid service as free web hosting only gives you limited space and sub-domains for your site.

You may settle for a shared server (where you share your space with other website owners) and it is a good tip is to go for the shared hosting first. However, it is often a good idea to see if the company is reliable before this more costly option of a dedicated server is taken. Websites require a domain name (not necessarily supplied by the web hosting company)otherwise no-one will be able to find you; once this has been done your domain will be allocated a specific amount of space for you to store your website, etc.

Google Chrome's Out of Beta. Now What?

While other products are in beta for years, Google has turned Chrome into a final product in months. What does it have up its sleeve?

Just three months after the release of Chrome, Google is following through on its vow to remove the "beta" label from its upstart browser -- making it a rare final product from a company notorious for its seemingly endless beta cycles.

Since its inception, Chrome has served as a test bed for new browser technologies, such as security models, Web standards support and transfer protocols -- experiments that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has said it hadn't wanted to attempt in connection with other, established open source efforts, like Mozilla Firefox. The company has issued 14 updates to its browser, almost at a rate of one per week since its release.

Now, with release 15, Google has dropped the beta label from Chrome, signaling that it considers the browser a "general availability," or final, product.

However, this doesn't mean that Chrome won't continue seeing improvements.

Graphic Design Tips

Great graphic design looks effortless, but it requires lots of attention to details. Think back to an eye-catching advertisement, publication, or flyer you saw recently. Do you remember why you liked it? Perhaps it was something specific like the use of a cool graphic or font. Or, more likely, the layout and the words worked together to create an eye-appealing, memorable message that you're still thinking about today.

A lot of thought, money, and skill probably went into that design. But you don't have to be a design guru to achieve expert results! Follow these five tips to create effective, professional-looking marketing materials for your small business.

Select appropriate font treatment: More is NOT better when it comes to fonts. Pick no more than two typefaces per document - one for headlines and one for body copy. Stick to a simple, clean font for easy body copy readability. Headline fonts can be a little more creative. For emphasis on certain words or phrases, use italics, boldface, or underlining sparingly. Also try to make the typeface match the personality of the service or product you're representing.

Use white space wisely: Just because the space is there doesn't mean you have to fill it! Good designs contain well-planned white space. ("White space" is simply the areas in a layout that are left bare - without text or graphics.) It gives the eye a break and helps to highlight the important points. Make sure to have enough space around the edges and in-between columns and articles. And remember that there is a fine line between not enough and too much white space. Consult well-designed magazines and ads or computer templates for layout inspiration and ideas.

Find effective graphics and photos: It's always better to use too few than too many graphics. One great graphic is so much better than four weak ones. Sometimes they are not even necessary. When you do use graphics and photos, make sure they help illustrate your point, rather than just inserting them to take up space. Likewise, be sure their sizes are appropriate to the space. Stick with high-quality graphics - in this age of affordable, quality clipart, there is no excuse to use any image that isn't perfectly clear and neat. Never use a "gif" file in a print document; those are created for web use only. Make sure the graphic element illustrates your main point - it's the first thing the reader sees, so it's important it portrays your message accurately. Lastly, don't mix differently styles of illustration or photography - keep a consistent look to create harmony.

Keep copy short and neat: Readers are more likely to read short sentences, paragraphs, and articles written as if you're having a friendly conversation. Break up large blocks of text with bullet points and subheads. Instead of using fancy multi-syllable complex vocabulary, use everyday words that your audience will understand. A good rule of thumb is to write at a sixth-grade reading level. Finally, always have someone else - whether a professional copy editor or a skilled friend - proofread your work. It's impossible to catch all your own typos.

Watch the flow: People generally read a page from top to bottom and from left to right. Draw people into the top left corner of your ad or newsletter with a headline or strong graphic. Then, pull their eyes down and through the text in the mid-section of the page, and finish up in the lower right corner. Picture a "Z" shape. Finally, be sure to include a "call to action" at the bottom to get the results you desire. For example, give readers your contact information and special offer, and tell them to "Call today!"

Ingredients For Great Web Design

There are few businesses that can afford to operate today without a web site. But if you’re not a web geek, you might feel intimidated by the idea of designing your own site. Here are some basic tips on good web site design from “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Creating a Website” by Paul McFedries:

Keep it simple. McFedries cautions against using every color, image or visual gadget available on your site. A well-designed site is a simple site. “You just need to avoid the most egregious graphical faults, such as ugly backgrounds that make text hard to read, colors that clash with each other and excessive use of fonts,” he writes.

Words matter. Pretty colors are nice, but “content is king.” If web users can’t find what they need or what is of interest to them on your site, a nice logo is wasted.

Keep a consistent message. Be sure to use the same color scheme from page to page and place important elements in the same place on every page.

Don’t hide the goods. Too many sites are way too confusing. Make the important stuff obvious, like how to contact you by mail, phone, e-mail or fax.

Be welcoming. McFedries recommends laying out “a virtual welcome mat” to make all the visitors to your site feel at home. The way to make it feel inviting is to have “good content and a consistent, easy-to-figure out layout” as well as “social elements,” including feedback forms and bulleting boards.

How To Design a Good Website

  • Your Web site should be well organized -- Create an outline before beginning the design process.
  • Web design tips Every graphic on a web page should be necessary -- Each graphic should relate to the text on that page, to the message being communicated, and to the audience.
  • Web design tips Background color should be easy on the eyes -- Some colors hurt the eyes and visitors to your site will leave quickly.
  • Web design tips Colored text should contrast with the background so that it is readable -- Don't lose sight of the fact that text on a page should be able to be read.
  • Web design tips Do not center all text on a page -- A large amount of centered text is difficult to read.
  • Web design tips Keep your copy short -- People don't have the time or patience to read large amounts of text from a computer monitor
  • Web design tips Keep width of text to about five inches -- Wide columns of text are difficult to read.
  • Web design tips If using audio files, or movies, give viewers a choice whether or not to use them.
  • Web design tips Don't use blue for regular text color -- Blue usually denotes links and can confuse the reader.
  • Web design tips Don't underline text for emphasis -- Underlined text usually signifies a link.
  • Web design tips Use motion sparingly! -- Motion should only be used when necessary to convey a message!
  • Web design tips Check readability of text -- Cut it and paste it into a Word document. Check for grammar and spelling.
  • Web design tips Always ask WHY you are putting certain information on the web -- Keep information short and sweet. If you want to give your viewers more information, create a pdf file for them to download.
  • Web design tips Always have contact information on your site -- Put your e-mail address, phone if necessary in a prominent location on your site.
  • Web design tips Use links to other sites that are relevant to yours -- You don't have to reinvent the wheel. There is a lot of information on the web that is relevant and can be helpful to visitors to your site.
  • Web design tips Include the webmaster's e-mail address on the contact page -- Viewers can report missing links or other problems. Nothing is more frustrating than links that don't work.
  • Web design tips Make sure your site is accessible to everyone regardless of the browser they are using -- There are no standards-no common denominators for the internet yet. Viewers have different equipment--modems with low baud speeds. Keep this in mind when including graphics and some of the bells and whistles you would like to use.
  • Web design tips Do not forget that your web site can be viewed by anyone, anywhere -- If you are trying to reach a global audience make sure your graphics can be translated and understood internationally.
  • Web design tips Check out your site on different browsers -- Colors will look different on a Mac than a PC.
  • Web design tips Look at other sites -- you can get ideas for your site: good design, good navigation, graphics by looking at other sites.

Website Designing - Looks vs. Works

Web developers with extensive graphic arts background often pay more attention to how a page looks than considering how visitors are going to find the page. The consideration on Usability and Business gets sidelined. On the other side of this issue, SEO consultants obsess about how much traffic it generates and how well a web site works. Sales and Business gets a front seat for them.

Designers want more 'pretty' graphics, but SEOs want lots of 'ugly' keyword-rich text, bullet lists, and text links. The more graphically complex the website the longer it will take to load.

To balance those Looks vs. Works, currently a web design company is in demand, which have an advanced knowledge on marketing, designing, programming as well as aesthetics. Designers having absolute control over the size and dimensions of all aspects with an eye on marketing are pitching to success. Today, fixed browser-friendly designs are more frequently chosen over the liquid designs.

There is a usability reason for why a designer may choose a more fixed layout. There is usually an optimal line width in terms of readability. There is a rule which tells that lines should be between 40-60 characters long, or approximately 11 words per line, though users can choose their windows size and font selection to optimize the factors which are important to them.

It becomes difficult sometimes to create a fixed layout which looks well and sells. Well, if the content is agreed upon, there is always a little difficulty in developing.

Storyboarding
To maintain an adorable balance between LOOKS and WORKS, the modern web gurus emphasize on storyboarding. Storyboarding covers the business, audience, purpose and the content. So the web designing is going to be more and more of calculative engineering than liberal art.

Storyboarding records description, purpose and title of each page in a given website. Then those elements are linked together according to the most effective and logical diagram patterns. It is like a prototype where there are options for feature enhancements and future improvements.

Audience Research
The key step in web designing/planning is defining the audience. They are the group of people who will visit your website – the market being targeted. Those people have a certain reason for visiting your site. And it is important for you to know what they are looking for. Technology and Eye-Candy designs come much later.

A clearly defined goal of the site and an understanding of what visitors want to do when they come to your site helps to pitch your message to identify the target audience. Upon considering who is most likely to use the content. There are some common factors a webmaster should take care.

They are:

Audience Characteristics - Age, Language, Education
Information Preferences - Techies, Naive
Computer Skills - Beginners, Masters
Web Experience - Web builders, Web surfers, Lay-users

Importance of XHTML Website Design

What is XHTML?

XHTML refers to the Extensible HyperText Markup Language, mainly used for designing websites that form a blend of old and new coding techniques. It became a worldwide standard for internet browsers, which offers support in generating the visibility of your website, even after updates. XHTML is certainly an ultimate choice since it offers a wonderful accessibility level to your website.

In order to maintain your website with the XHTML option, there are some essential rules to be followed. These rules are exclusively up to your website designing firm, which thereafter, delivers the service and final product.

The whole process of creating an XHTML document starts with doc-type declaration, which characterizes the complete site. The most common is XHTML 1.0 Transitional, along with others. Moreover, there are free validation services, available to verify the coding of your website like validator.w3.org. A valid website presents great benefits in search engine rankings. According to the Accessibility Discrimination Act, all websites should work alike for disable people, using screen readers and also similar for standard web browsers such as the Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Opera.

XHTML web design methods allow generating a website with accurate code. Additionally, Google is tending towards validating websites with better pace, better comfort, and high performance deliverance. With XHTML being a light weighted code, you can design a website that is about 60-80% smaller, which provide benefits to the Google or any other search engine crawlers. Also, your web site visitors and potential customers get benefited with a 60-80% decrease in the webpage load time.

A legitimate XHTML website delivers better speed and provides proper display in all the web browsers, thereby providing access to even those clients who work on ordinary web browsers. This further leads to greater traffic attraction, thereby generating better prospects for your company.

Basic Seo Tips for Web Designer

After designing a layout for a web site, we obviously start converting it into HTML during this session as a web designer we mainly concentrate on cross browser compatibility but we also need to concentrate on some basic seo things like…

  1. Using Correct Doctype.
  2. Using Meta Content and Meta Keywords.
  3. Using Alt tags for Images.
  4. Using Valid HTML and CSS code.
  5. Make your web site load fast.
1. Why to Use Doctype and what does correct doctype means?

Document type defination(DTD) is also know as Doctype, doctype informs the browser how to interpret the content of the page. If the the doctype is not declared, the browser assumes you don’t know how to code, and goes into quirks mode. If you know what you are doing and include a correct HTML doctype, your page will be rendered in standards mode.

Some Recommended DTDs to use in your Web document.

Use correct doctype, for example your using strict doctype and you use used align in in div tag or in p tag then doctype you used is not correct because align attribute is deprecated in strict doctype.

2. Using Meta Content and Meta Keywords.

Use proper keywords and content relate to your web site, that helps search engine to crawl your web site.

3. Using Alt tags for Images.

Specify alt tag for image and that alt tag should be a keyword related to web site, because images you have placed on site can be seen by visitors but not by search engines, so alt tag help search engines to read, with the help of alt tags search engines display the image results.

4. Using Valid HTML and CSS code.

Validate your html and css code and make your code w3c standard.

validate your html code here

http://validator.w3.org

validate your css code here

http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator

5. Make your web site load fast.

Don’t mess up your site with heavy images that makes your site heavy and slow, try to optimize images that reduces weight and helps to load fast.

Advantages of a custom website versus using a Website Builder Tool

The internet has revolutionized business all around the globe. Almost every competent new or existing business wishes to exploit the incredible potential of the internet, and the first step is to have a web site designed done and maintained by a professional web site design service or build and maintain it yourself. One of the first things to consider is your computer ability. If you despise computers and software and find them confusing and frustrating then building your own website can be quite a task. One that you may not want to undertake. However, if you enjoy working with computers and learning new things or if you just have the patience to stick with it, then building a website is within your grasp. You may also decide to do it yourself to save cost. If you still feel that you want to build your own site you should choose software that is easy to use and user friendly.

Your website should be as unique as you and your business. You should select the website that is specialized in what will meet all your needs, both now and in the future. Custom based websites are for those who already have a website but are looking for those special finishing touches that quality custom graphics can provide. Designer graphics can make your website stand out above the rest and a custom website specializes in taking your original graphic or photo and turning it into a unique work of art. Quality graphics make an incredible difference in the visual appeal of your website.

Actual site "content" continues to be essential to the success of a website. More often than not though, visual appeal is the determining factor as to whether or not a client or customer will remain on a website long enough, to actually see the product or service the business is providing. Custom websites are for those who don’t have the time to design or create, but want to get things mush better and fast with a nice graphics.

Web site builders are online tools which anyone can use to build a professional looking Web site without programming and have it hosted instantly. No software to buy, no code to learn, all you need is to be a little Internet savvy and know how to click your mouse.

Most business owners today know that having a web site is an essential component of marketing. In the past, the choices were to hire a professional web designer, hire a local teenager to create a site for mall money, or learn to do it yourself. The last two options, are the least expensive, and were the preferred method for small businesses. The results are often not what businesses need to grow, reach, and impress new potential customers, however. They seem good at the start but quickly become limiting.

If you operate or manage a business, you surely must realize the increase in e-commerce taking place today. Many businesses find themselves searching for the best way to increase their exposure on the internet, and for most a website is the first course of action. As most businesses operate on firm budgets, finding cost effective solutions are usually one of the first thoughts when looking to make new purchases. When it comes to creating a website there are many affordable software programs that can produce professional results. Business software should be capable of handling your needs today and in the future. Business are always changing, adding new products, changing or removing old products, offering specials, having sales, etc. By choosing a business website builder over a professional web designer you will be able to make changes to your website whenever you want to. Another benefit is that you will be avoiding the high costs associated with developing the website and costs for making any necessary changes.

Website Builder tools advantages to you are increased revenue, cost control, caters to the large demand existing for web designing in the SME sector and can increase the client base without adding to your overhead. The advantage that your customers gets is a professional quality website, up and running in minutes and a User friendly and easily customizable interfaces that gives a complete website with all its frills and features and a nice attractive design. The downside is that you are limited to the look and functions of the tool and the templates or designs they provide.

On of the advantage of a custom website design is that the web site will look and function exactly as you want. A custom made web site can promote your brand and increase sales. The functionality and design of your website is important, because the images and text on the screen can make an indifferent visitor turn into a keen client, and the goal is to optimize your site to evolve maximum traffic conversion.

As more and more people are starting their own small home business many are finding that having a website is an important factor to consider. When one starts to consider building a website, especially the novice, many questions arise including can I create a website myself or should I hire a professional?

Hiring a professional is a great way to go if you can afford it. Although there are several things to keep in mind: how much will it cost? How much will ongoing maintenance cost? What will changes cost? How long will changes take? etc. As a result, many people opt to build their own website and begin searching for software that can easily help them.

Seven reasons your website sucks

Web design errors you make at your peril

Our sister title .net, the bible for web designers and developers, has saved web sites and designers' jobs with its list of the top 10 design mistakes and how to avoid them.

Here are seven from the ten that are guaranteed to make your site suck.

  1. Non-standard UI elements

With web design, it's tempting to define not only the appearance of page content, but also the browser controls. This is commonplace with forms and scrollbars, but Jakob Nielsen of useit.com reckons mucking about with these elements is dangerous. "Basic GUI widgets are the lexical units that form dialogue design's vocabulary," he cautions. "Changing their appearance or behaviour is like injecting foreign words into a natural-language communication."

A Web-based app builder with a Microsoft twist

Now that the desktop revolution is largely over, most of the excitement lies in the counter-desktop revolution that is bringing all the flair developed by the desktop programmers back to the safe world of the server. Caspio is one of the most prominent players seeking to lure the desktop database builders away from Microsoft Access and back into the datacenter's fold. The company has been around since before the last bubble burst, and now it boasts a number of prominent companies as customers.

The process is simple and requires, as Caspio's Web site promises, "no more programming." First you specify some database tables and then you describe how these tables can be filled up with Web forms. After a bit of testing, you push a button and copy some JavaScript, and the forms are deployed on your Web site. The data your Web application captures lives in Caspio's datacenter.

Free Web Hosting Tips

With the wealth of free web hosting offers it's sometimes hard to decide which provider fits you. This article is meant to underline a few aspects you should keep in mind when choosing such a service.

  1. The reliability of the service and their offers.

A brand new hosting provider which boasts features that are too good to be true usually won't last for too long. Let's take the example of one host (I won't give names here) that went offline only a few weeks ago. They were offering 500MB of storage, 10GB of bandwidth per month, domain hosting, unlimited domain parking, CPanel with just about all possible features, absolutely no ads (not even a request to link back), and this only for 150 posts in their forum. Sounds too good to be true? Betcha! After they cashed in two fat checks from AdSense they simply went offline. No prior notice, no apology, nothing.

    Things to watch out for:

    • Design. If the site looks like it was bought from a man in a white van, or if it's using a design from a free template site, it's probably just a waste of time. If these guys couldn't pay a web designer $100 for a decent layout, they don't probably have the skills to run such a site.
    • How long they've been around. I'm not saying that new sprung hosting services can't make it, just be careful when choosing one that's two months old.
    • Check their Google PR, ranking on free hosting directories and any other location you might think of. If the site has tons of inbound links, the owners have probably spent a considerable amount of money advertising it, so they plan to do their best to keep the service up.
  2. Ads

Advertising placed on your web space is how free web hosting providers support their service. Having someone else's ads displayed on your page is usually the price you have to pay for their free service. There are a select few hosts that won't plug in banners or other forms of advertising in exchange for your performing other services in their favour (like posting in their forum or referring other members). What you should look for: - How well the ads blend into your design. A red frame at the top will probably not go well with your blue template. If possible, pick a host that allows you to place a banner code anywhere you want-- this way you can put it wherever it best fits.

    • Whether or not they display targeted ads. If your site is on dog chewing toys and the ads are on car deals your visitors will probably not like it. Worse, watch out for sites that display pornographic ads.
    • What kind of ads they're displaying. Never, under any circumstances, sign up for a site that advertises through popups. Popups are extremely annoying, and most visitors will not return to your site.
    • Do they allow your own ads to be displayed? It's one BIG issue you should know before signing up if you plan to make money with your site.

  3. Tools and scripts available

Forums, guest books, counters, polls are always nice features to add to your site. If you can't or don't want to handle installing such an addon from a third party you could look for a host that already provides it. Keep in mind that these tools are not always the best and that there are most likely many other free ones out there. On the other hand, if your chosen host provides very few or no such tools, then it's probably either running on a slow server and doesn't want to clog it up or doesn't give a dime about their customers.

  4. Monthly bandwidth and what they do after you eat it up

Always, no matter how small your site is, look for a host that offers at least 1GB of traffic per month. Also consider going with a host that will offer you a paid subscription if you go over this quota instead of simply blocking access to your page. Say you hit the jackpot and visitors start flowing in like crazy from day one. Next day you don't want them to see a page like "Sorry, this site has gone over the allotted bandwidth, please check back in a month or so".

Try this simple calculation: say your pages average 50kB, including images, or (approx.) 0.05MB. Now let's say your visitors browse 3 pages on average, before they leave the site. That's 3 x 0.05 = 0.15 MB. If we divide 1GB (or 1,000 MB) by 0.15, we get 6,666 -- the average number of visitors you can get in one month without going over the bandwidth quota. Divide that by 30 and you can have 222 visitors per day. Also keep in mind that search engines also eat up bandwidth, a deep crawl from a spider can eat up as much as 100MB if you have a lot of pages.

  5. What your URL will look like

Even though you can get a short URL for free from services like http://go.to or a subdomain (.co.nr / .biz.ly etc), it's always best if your host can offer you a URL that's easy to remember. Choose a host that offers a subdomain if available (http://youraccount.theirdomain.com as opposed to http://www.theirdomain.com/youraccount).

Domain Name Registration and Web Hosting Tips

If you are not really serious about making money online, then this would be the right time to hit back button without wasting a single moment here on this article. If you are serious, then we would be privileged to share some great online money making secrets with you. Let’s get into the issue and explore the answers to some of the widely asked questions.

What is your online identity?

You might have seen at least one stranger asking a traffic police about someone’s address in your life. If such identity doesn’t exit then how would you expect the traffic police to explain the directions! So your address is your existence in a certain locality. So if you want others inquiry about you online, then you should have an online address. Though there are several other ways to obtain an online identity, but the most secured and profitable way is; owning a website. You can specify details about yourself, your business or profession and you can add the contact details so that others can contact you.

How Can I Own a Website?

This is one of the significant steps. There are several factors involve before launching a website of your own. Domain name registration is the very step in launching your own website. This is the sole identity of your online business and your business brand. People prefer various ways before choosing a domain name. Let me add some marketing sense to this particular discussion. Though there are several other ways to access World Wide Web. Search Engines are one of the widely used resources that most of the internet users use to access and retrieve information online. Almost 80% internet users use search engines. Search engines are specifically developed to store online information (in various forms like webpage, video, image, PDF, Doc and so on) and also produce relevant information after processing the user searched keywords.

There are several factors involve while synchronizing web document for a searched query. The search engine algorithm considers the URL, Meta Elements, Content and number of relevant back links to s webpage. So you should do some research before select the most popular term for your domain. Because this enables you to get your website exposed easily and quickly. The better and more relevant domain name you choose the more business you will get out of your website.

Selecting the Right Extension

There are various types of extension and this defines what type of website is yours. For example, “.com” is the extension for commercial websites; “.org” is for non-commercial organizations; “.edu” is for education institutions. There are country specific extensions too, like .in, .ie, .com.au, .us and so on. Recently there are some other new extensions are used, like, .travel and .mobi. So now you can select the appropriate extension for your website.

Once you are done with right domain name with appropriate extension, now it’s the time for selecting the right web hosting company. There are millions of web hosting companies are operating online. They promise a lot, but your negligence and ignorance can cost you heavier. So ensure everything before registering and hosting your website.

Useful tips for writing efficient CSS

Jonathan Snook has posted a few great CSS coding tips in Top CSS Tips. Several of them come down to personal preferences, and it seems my preferences differ a bit from Jonathan’s in some cases, so I thought I’d go through his tips and note my take on each of them.

px for font sizes

Jonathan’s arguments for using px make sense, but I always use em. I’ve learned how to use a combination of percentages and ems and feel comfortable sizing text that way.

CSS declarations on one line

Unlike Jonathan I use a single line for rules that only contain one declaration, but multiple lines for rules with multiple declarations. TextMate’s code folding takes care of the rest for me. Jonathan makes a valid comment about file size savings with single line declarations though.

Blocking the Styles

I do pretty much the same thing: first element declarations, next global classes, and finally the layout containers and sections.

Crawler Friendly Web Design

"I'm not designing my site for search engines," is a common designer objection to SEO suggestions. But when search engines collectively have more users than either Internet Explorer or Firefox, how can you afford to ignore how they interact with your site. Search engines are like the third major browser, and if your site breaks for them, it breaks for all those potential visitors from search engines. Search engine friendly sites aren't hard to create and can be attractive to both search engines and human visitors at the same time.

Moderator: Gillian Muessig, President, SEOmoz

Speaker:
Shari Thurow, Founder and SEO Director, Omni Marketing Interactive

Shari asks how many of us have heard this session before, and lets us know that the presentation has been changed. The presentation will be available for download. Do download – there's a lot of good information in the presentation.

Shari makes clear that this session is not based on her personal design preferences, but the session is based on statistics and data. She is getting PhD in HCI with a specialization in search engines. Many of the slides she shows today are not even from her clients, but ones that illustrate her points.

HTML and CSS Validation: Should You Validate Your Web Page?

f you don't hang around webmaster circles, you may not realise that HTML validation and CSS validation are controversial issues with some people. This article discusses some of the positions taken in these discussions to provide some perspectives on issues that have come increasingly to the fore in web development. Hopefully, the article will also provide a practical method that overworked webmasters can use to improve their website.

Some Background Information: What does Validating HTML or CSS Mean?

For those who are unfamiliar with what validating a web page (ie validating your HTML or CSS code) means, it basically refers to using a program or an online service to check that the web page that you created is free of errors.

In particular, an HTML validator checks to make sure the HTML code on your web page complies with the standards set by the W3 Consortium (the organisation that issues the HTML standards). There are various types of validators - some check only for errors, others also make suggestions about your code, telling you when a certain way of writing things might lead to (say) unexpected results.
