How Search Fits Into The Web Site Design Process

I've been in search and online marketing for many years, and I've learned that while some messages may seem old and familiar (or at least well-worn), they may still be new to others who are guiding the enterprise Web site development and creation process.

I was recently going through a discovery process with a Fortune 500 executive who was guiding his company's Web site redesign, and I inquired directly about the search aspects of the project. His response: "Search is not relevant to this process." Contrary to what he was saying, search was in fact critical to the overall process; he was just clearly unaware of his company's campaign history and investment in the search channel. In light of this response, seemingly old and worn advice is worth another spin or two around the block, especially if it will help convey the natural search value of a legacy Web presence.

In enterprise marketing, it is not a question of whether your company's site is going to be redesigned or not, it is simply a question of when. Most companies do some kind of major redesign or tweak every two years, and if they haven't just relaunched, they are planning for the next one. So the "when" is most often "now," no matter where you are in the process. The important thing to remember here is that search should be a key consideration at every stage of the process, whether it is selecting a provider, setting requirements, producing comps, coding or site deployment.

Improving Marketing Design and the Consumer Experience

Most marketers aren't technologists. Even digital marketers who frequently rely on technology typically count on technology professionals to advise them on best practice use of those technologies.

But digital marketers also tend to be early adopters and tinkerers. They have an iPhone; they've been on Twitter forever; they download and test new software, and might even be able to hook up their own home entertainment system. They're attracted to the latest technology like a dog to a bone.

While the application or use of a particular technology doesn't make an e-marketing strategy, we absolutely need to know what's out there, what's worth the investment, how it advances our marketing objectives, and what it can do to improve the online experience for consumers.

Technology isn't just a consumer issue; it's also business issue. We do our jobs better when we have knowledge of, and access to, the best tools. So today I'll spotlight a couple of technologies and approaches, and will continue to do so in this column as I come across those that can help us do our best work.

Adobe Flex and CS4

Adobe's Flex platform, an open source framework, is used to create rich media applications that can live on desktops. The designers I know have no end of praise for it.

Flex makes it easy for designers and programmers to integrate Flash and build truly compelling Web sites and online applications. Sites created on the Flex platform make for a much more seamless user experience, while still supporting interactivity at all levels. Transitions are smoother; pages don't have to be refreshed in order to change content.

I've heard Flex described as a content management system for Flash, which makes the previously cumbersome and technology-laden process of changing copy in Flash applications available to non-programmers. The implication is huge for maintaining and update Web sites that use Flash.

Flex also facilitates applications such as calendars, shopping carts and the like for e-commerce sites. Flex can provide a much better shopping experience for consumers, allowing easy refreshment of shopping carts and richer viewing of products.

Flex is proprietary to the Adobe suite of services, so it has to be purchased but most developers already rely on Adobe. For consumers, it requires a Flash plug-in, but that plug-in has one of the highest adoption rates.

Another Adobe product, Adobe's Creative Suite 4 (which includes Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, Acrobat Pro, Dreamweaver, After Effects and more), continues to prove itself as a must-have tool for Web designers. This release boasts an increasingly integrated approach to designing, sharing, and producing content across channels.

It's a very useful tool to streamline processes and improve productivity. By creating an efficient workflow. CS4 enables rich marketing design across print, Web, interactive, video, audio, and mobile, which is the type of integration and cohesion that marketers crave.

Identifying Web Trends for 2009

We're not even a month into the new year, but already there is speculation as to what web design will bring. Identifying on-going experimentation may lead us to new and exciting design approaches.

So what new trends will 2009 most likely bring?

Rich User Interfaces

As websites become more user friendly and accessible, user interfaces have evolved resulting in rich and responsive interfaces that have tremendous similarities with classic desktop applications. With AJAX and Flash becoming more widely used, dynamic interactions are not just reserved for professionals.

In addition, sites are becoming more in-tuned with user behaviors, tailoring functionality to confirm and provide immediate feedback on the user’s interaction with the system.

43 Web Design Mistakes You Should Avoid

here are several lists of web design mistakes around the Internet. Most of them, however, are the “Most common” or “Top 10” mistakes. Every time I crossed one of those lists I would think to myself: “Come on, there must be more than 10 mistakes…”. Then I decided to write down all the web design mistakes that would come into my head; within half an hour I had over thirty of them listed. Afterwards I did some research around the web and the list grew to 43 points.

The next step was to write a short description for each one, and the result is the collection of mistakes that you will find below. Some of the points are common sense, others are quite polemic. Most of them apply to any website though, whether we talk about a business entity or a blog. Enjoy!

  1. The user must know what the site is about in seconds: attention is one the most valuable currencies on the Internet. If a visitor can not figure what your site is about in a couple of seconds, he will probably just go somewhere else. Your site must communicate why I should spend my time there, and FAST!
  2. Make the content scannable: this is the Internet, not a book, so forget large blocks of text. Probably I will be visiting your site while I work on other stuff so make sure that I can scan through the entire content. Bullet points, headers, subheaders, lists. Anything that will help the reader filter what he is looking for.
  3. Do not use fancy fonts that are unreadable: sure there are some fonts that will give a sophisticated look to your website. But are they readable? If your main objective is to deliver a message and get the visitors reading your stuff, then you should make the process comfortable for them.
  4. Do not use tiny fonts: the previous point applies here, you want to make sure that readers are comfortable reading your content. My Firefox does have a zooming feature, but if I need to use on your website it will probably be the last time I visit it.
  5. Do not open new browser windows: I used to do that on my first websites. The logic was simple, if I open new browser windows for external links the user will never leave my site. WRONG! Let the user control where he wants the links to open. There is a reason why browsers have a huge “Back” button. Do not worry about sending the visitor to another website, he will get back if he wants to (even porn sites are starting to get conscious regarding this point lately…).
  6. Do not resize the user’s browser windows: the user should be in control of his browser. If you resize it you will risk to mess things up on his side, and what is worse you might lose your credibility in front of him.
  7. Do not require a registration unless it is necessary: lets put this straight, when I browse around the Internet I want to get information, not the other way around. Do not force me to register up and leave my email address and other details unless it is absolutely necessary (i.e. unless what you offer is so good that I will bear with the registration).
  8. Never subscribe the visitor for something without his consent: do not automatically subscribe a visitor to newsletters when he registers up on your site. Sending unsolicited emails around is not the best way to make friends.
  9. Do not overuse Flash: apart from increasing the load time of your website, excessive usage of Flash might also annoy the visitors. Use it only if you must offer features that are not supported by static pages.
  10. Do not play music: on the early years of the Internet web developers always tried to successfully integrate music into websites. Guess what, they failed miserably. Do not use music, period.

Shopping For Web Design Software – Its Doesn’t Have To Be Expensive

Web design software packages come really expensive. Be it graphic, video, animation or programming softwares, you will need to shell out bucks to own them. However, to not spend huge and still make sure that you get the best deal, you need to keep in mind a few considerations.

Here are some tips to help you have a profitable shopping experience.

Find Out Free Stuff

Before you set out to ‘buy’ web design softwares, research on the Internet to find any free stuff. There are many good HTML and web design editors available on the Internet, absolutely free that offer superior quality of work as well. Check out a few options to see what suits you best.

Lesser Priced Web Editors

If you fail to get anything in the free galore that suits your requirements, check out inexpensive HTML editors like Rapid PHP Editor, CoffeeCup HTML Editor, UltraEdit etc. they might work well for your needs.

Go Through Bookstores

This is an especially good option for students. Go through bookstores and find out student editions of the desired software. Academic prices may be much lower than the market rates. However, these versions may have specifications that restrict the use for only academic purposes and include lesser features than the regular one.

Make sure you check through the details before purchasing academic editions. If it works for you, nothing better than that!

Trial and Demo Versions

Trial and demo versions of softwares are usually free and can be used for about a month or so. Though you may not own the software forever, demo versions are the best way to try out the softwares and see how well it caters to your requirements. Moreover, you can get some work done during the trial period using the software. When you have worked with it for a while, you will have a better understanding of the products and how well it is able to meet you needs.

Value adding within the web design industry

When I founded my web development business, all I did was websites. By itself that's a fine way to make a living - if you have a lot of new business beating a path to your door. It didn't take long to realise however that while I was making a name for myself I would need to do more if I was going to survive the first twelve months. Fortunately, the answer came to me in a question from my next customer. "Can you organise my business cards too?"

Now my first reaction was to say no, after all I was a high-flying-wannabe web designer. I didn't have time to waste on any non-website matters. But upon thinking about it I realised that there were a whole lot of services out there that weren't really that far removed from the essence of web design. The essence, I hear you ask? Well, think about it from the average startup business' point of view. It's all about marketing their image so as to generate sales. So what else can a small time web designer do to help market their clients' image? Lets make a list...

Firstly, would have to be the web site itself, right? Wrong! There's probably a graphic artist in your company already, otherwise how are you making eye catching websites? Ok, maybe you contract that out. That's fine. By the time we're done, you might be contracting a few more things out too. Anyway the point is that your graphic design could start with a new logo for the startup business or the business undergoing a full re-branding. And once you have their logo contract, they'll no doubt be wanting to produce business cards, letterheads, with compliments slips, etc. See where we're going here? How hard would it be to introduce yourself to a few local printing firms and develop a repeat business relationship on behalf of your customers. Play your cards right and you'll be getting trade discount sufficient enough to give your customers no reason to shop elsewhere. And you thought you only did websites! There's no reason why you can't also offer large format printing too if your printer offers it for banners and presentation displays. Your customers will be thrilled that you can do everything they need.

But getting back to the website, which is probably why your customer came to you in the first place. The website is no good without a domain name registration, web hosting, search engine optimisation and maybe even a pay-per-click advertising campaign to really get them off and racing. All value added services to your client and all very achievable by you.

So the point is to be in tune with your customers needs. Have a look at your business and see how you might best leverage the skills and resources available to you to provide your clients the best and most comprehensive service possible.

New Web Hosting? Some Tips

Hosting is the service that provides Internet users a system to store information, images, video, or from any content accessible via their website. There are literally thousands of suppliers, so you will have to decide by some basic factors such as:

What kind of service given by email support?
A hosting provider that does not answer your emails up to 36 hours does not deserve consideration.

The provider allows you to grow?
One of the problems unknown until it's time to switch suppliers, is that change is sometimes very annoying, as some support some features with which you conducted your pages when counted, but the new provider might not have, and that will change the way your site operates. The time it may take is variable but at least it is a nuisance having to change something that is not planned.

The supplier has inflated prices for excess monthly traffic?
The monthly traffic is the amount of information that passes from or to you or your clients on your hosting provider. In most cases, the monthly transfer amount allocated will be sufficient, if your site does not have a large amount of software to download or provide abundant information. If it exceeds the specified limit your provider will charge you an excess amount of traffic. Always note that this amount is not excessive with respect to the initial rate.

The provider gives you a complete solution?
Your provider should give you the perfect opportunity to buy your domain and host your pages on a single option, as it set the domain to point to your hosting provider is not a task known to all and if you need specialist help for this item, then the cost of accommodation could rise unnecessarily. That is, your provider should provide a comprehensive solution that helps keep down the total cost of hosting.

Tips on Domain Name Choice

Tips on Domain Name Choice

Before buying your domain name, give some thought to the following:-

  1. If possible use your sites name as the basis of your domain name e.g www.discountdomainsuk.com for Discount Domains UK. This might seem common sense but not every site follows the convention. If you use your name in your URL it will be much easier for your customers to find you.
  2. Generic names – if you can register a generic domain such as toys.com that’s great, but most of these have already gone. Also getting ranked in the search engines is likely to be harder. Selected a domain closer to your market segment will cut down the competition. E.g toyplanes.com
  3. Hyphenated Names – Its easy to forget the hyphen! Which is the problem, particularly if your customer remembers your name but not your URL. Though on a positive note hyphenated names are less likely to be registered already.
  4. If the .com or .co.uk extension is not available then consider the alternative TLD ( Top level domain types) such as .net or .biz. If your domain name has already been registered then approach the owner and ask if they’ll sell. They may accept a £100. If you ask, they can only say no.
  5. Plurals. Very often a domain name will be free in the plural but not in the singular form. It’s a personal choice, but if your prefered choice of domain name is not available you might be stuck.
  6. Short or Long domains – A short domain name is more memorable, but less likely to be available. A longer domain is harder to remember, but can contain more keywords which is important as some of the search engines, use keywords in a domain name as part of the search algorithm.
  7. Which Top Level Domain Type - .com, .co.uk , .net etc This is a question I am often asked. There is no evidence that any domain name type is given preference by the search engines. However some search engines such as Google, have local searches e.g www.google.co.uk which do select local content. Customer often get re-assurance from seeing a local TLD as they know they are dealing with a local company etc. You can, of course, register all of them!
  8. Variations – If your prefered domain name is not available then its always worth trying a prefix my e.g mydomains.com or suffix e.g domains4U.com etc

Web Design Tips: Rounded Borders in CSS

Consumers often judge online stores by visual aesthetics alone, so Internet shopkeepers are wise to use large appealing images, handsome fonts, and occasionally an eye-pleasing curve.

When that curve is added someplace unexpected, say in a border around a text box or an image, it can be especially impactful. In this Web Design Tips, a recurring Practical eCommerce feature, I'll show you how to use CSS alone to bend the corners of your site's border elements. I'll also give you an update on the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) border-radius property in CSS3 and discuss browser compatibility—since Microsoft's Internet Explorer trails most other browsers in supporting this property in any form.
Rounded Borders in CSS

As you probably know, CSS stands for cascading style sheets. Basically, CSS are short text documents that serve as a "mechanism for adding style (e.g. fonts, colors, spacing) to web documents," or so said the W3C in its official description of the standard.

For years, designers have been using images or complex JavaScripts to add rounded corners to boxes and borders. But there is a CSS3 property that effective smoothes out otherwise pointed corners, simply and easily. The border-radius properties will round the corners of a border. The available tags are border-top-right-radius, border-bottom-right-radius, border-bottom-left-radius, border-top-left-radius, border-radius. The border-radius tag will take two lengths.

Tips For Ideal OS Web Hosting

Have you completed designing your website? Yes, so now you are on the lookout for a web hosting company is not it? Remember, choosing the web hosting company at random will only create problem and empty your pockets. What should be done? Before choosing the web hosting company you have to chalk out a plan about the operating system that you require from the company. What does operating system mean?

Meaning of Operating System:

The operating system means the server that provides all the necessary aids required for providing your website the best possible services as per the design of your website. Which are the available servers? The commonly available servers are Windows, Linux and UNIX.

These along with the software that they are equipped with gives the maximum benefit to you. What facilities do the Windows provide? The windows are easy to operate for people who use their personal pc which is installed with any version of Windows like ME, XP, NT or similar system. In the same manner there are two other servers Linux and UNIX which are equipped with PHP, BSD which is available in two types that is free and open.

How to decide which operating system should be chosen? It depends on your need but you should also keep in mind that the hosting companies use the servers that is most in demand so if you try to choose any company explicitly you may have to forgo many facilities that are provided by the reputed companies and will have to opt for a company which in the long run may prove to be a disastrous choice. Then what is the best way out where a hosting company can be chosen which will provide all the facilities that are required?

Tips for Ideal OS in a Dedicated Web Hosting

What is dedicated web hosting? It means that the server will not be shared with anybody but the hosting company will allot the server in totality for your website. You will have full control over the server which will contain hardware required for your operating system.

The hosting company may also give additional service which will be free of cost. This way you can get more returns than your investment in the long run. What is the Operating System support available on dedicated web hosting? The basic operating system available on dedicated web hosting is open source operating system, net BSD, open BSD and free BSD. The added benefit is that all these systems are free of cost.

For a beginner it is best to choose the Windows as he will not have to worry about any technical language nor face the headache of maintaining and updating the UNIX system. But this is best if the website is for personal use.

Flash design tips

To create precise vector graphics in Flash, it’s all about learning to use and control the tools.

The drawing tools in Macromedia Flash MS 2004 allow you to create precision vector graphics. Vector graphics are line-based graphics. In the world of mathematics, a vector is a line that has a defined starting point, a designated direction, and a specified distance. With vector graphics, vectors control the manner in which curved and straight lines are shaped between specific points. The picture is made up of these lines as well as the colors of areas enclosed by the lines.

Because of how they are created, vector graphics can be resized easily without reducing image quality. A vector graphic appears much smoother and more precise than a raster (or bitmap) image, which is made up of pixels (dots). Vector graphics also download faster than comparable raster images.

Tools

Flash offers several drawing tools for drawing vector graphics. The Tools palette should be open by default, but if you can’t see it along the left side of the Flash window, select Tools from the Window menu to activate it. (Don’t confuse the Toolbars submenu with the Tools command; they are two separate entries on the Window menu.)

30 Ways To Keep Visitors On Site: Watch Your Conversion Rate Soar

Search engine optimization, links, directories — all of these are well-known means to drive visitors to your site. But, what can you do to keep them there? The number of visitors who land on your site and quickly move on is called your bounce rate — the rate at which visitors bounce to another site.

So, here are 30 sure-fire tips to keep visitors on site longer — and maybe even bookmark your site for future visits.

  1. Teach them something. You can't swing a dead copywriter without hitting a Glazer-Kennedy "Who else wants to make a million dollars?" long-form sales letter on the web. It's page after page of hype, with a PS and a PPS just to make things urgent and "interesting."

Interesting? That's not what visitors want – steaming piles of hype. Provide informational content – no sales – about your product or services. Teach visitors and they'll look favorably upon your site.

  2. Keep it fresh. Related to #1, if they've read it once they won't wont to read it again so keep adding new articles of interest to your primary demographic – your ideal buyer.

  3. Add a blog. Blogs can be added to a site with a click if you go with a web host with a big tool kit. Blogs are an easy means of adding new content. It's a great way to add user-generated content (free stuff) and it's a terrific way to build a site community – a dedicated group of visitors who visit your blog everyday.

  4. Keep the navigation really, really simple. First, navigation links should be large and clearly labeled. One boating supply site uses "Gulls" and "Buoys" as labels for their women's and men's clothing line. May be cute but it's also confusing.

Also, keep navigation consistent throughout the site. If you use a navigation bar at the top of the home page, keep it there on all landing pages so visitors don't have to look for it.

  5. Provide a site map. It's easy to get lost on a site that has a couple of hundred pages. A link to a site map helps visitors (and search engine spiders), and an omni-present link to the homepage keeps visitors from bailing on your site simply because they took a wrong turn.

  6. Provide product pictures. Indeed, product pictures sell products….something about a picture being worth a 1,000 words.

  7. Provide complete product descriptions. Skip the sales yak. Keep your product descriptions 100% informational. Be sure to list all product features. Then move on to #8.

  8. Describe product benefits. Most site owners (and copywriters) describe a product's features, i.e. 300 watts of raw power, a low-cut vamp, etc., but buyers don't purchase features; they purchase benefits. Be sure to describe how the product will make the reader's life easier, simpler, more productive, more fun or just better.

  9. Provide numerous marketing channels. Some visitors will be comfortable ordering online; others want to order by telephone. Give visitors a choice and post that telephone number on every page of the site.

  10. Keep it fun. Write in a chatty tone. Even serious subjects become more readable – accessible – when written in normal-speak not web-speak.

  11. Ask for site feedback. Provide the visitor with a means of leaving feedback for you and other readers.

  12. Encourage product reviews. Amazon does it and look what it's done for them. Good product reviews from visitors (1) shows you care about their needs and (2) provides solid gold marketing input. If the item is routinely slammed, dump it. If it gets good buyer reviews move it to the home page.

  13. Separate informational content from sales content. The easiest way to do this is to create an archive of informational content separate and distinct from product pages.

  14. Don't assume all visitors will land on the home page. Search engines index every page of a site so a category landing page may have more relevance to the user's query than the home page. So, consider every page a landing page and every product page a landing page, i.e. tell the visitor where s/he is.

  15. Keep site pages light. Even 30 seconds is an eternity when waiting for a page download. In fact, you'll lose 90% of potential visitors who have to wait for a 30-second download. Now that's a short attention span!

  16. Create visitor trust. From home page to landing page to checkout sequence, create trust in the minds of visitors. Not only does it keep visitors on-site longer, it generates more sales.

  17. Add RSS feeds. This simplifies the visitor's day by providing in one place all pertinent information relevant to the topicality of your site. So, instead of having to visit 10 sites for the latest in gold investing news, visitors can access your site for the latest via RSS feed.

  18. Please the eye. It's a subliminal thing. Pastels are appropriate for sites selling makeup or clothing. Fluorescent green works well for that high-protein energy boosting shake. Two completely different buyers, two different products, two different looks.

  19. Give them something to watch. A how-to video or PowerPoint deck will keep visitors watching, especially if it provides useful information. There's just something hypnotic about moving pictures!

  20. Allow visitors to bookmark pages. This is so simple to do yet few site owners do it. It's the best way for visitors to compare product A to product B.

  21. Don't be afraid of syndicated content. Some webmasters shy away from syndicated content because it's duplicate content and, therefore, doesn't help in SERPs placement. Okay, but it does provide informational content relevant to the interests of your visitor. And it's free. Remember, the objective is to keep them on site for as long as possible to make that sale.

  22. Personalize the homepage. Welcome repeat visitors by name. Make recommendations based on previous purchases. Create a "Your Shopping Cart" feature. In other words, make the visitor feel welcomed and valued. They are.

  23. Plant Easter Eggs. You don't see this much but it's a great idea. Easter eggs are little surprises. The term comes from computer gaming in which programmers plant little surprises to be discovered by the player.

In the case of your site, tell readers about the Easter eggs on the home page. Tell them what they can "win" by discovering an Easter Egg – a small give-away that you can buy in quantity. Visitors will be looking at every page trying to find those fun surprises – and FREE stuff.

  24. Make sure your informational content is accurate. There is so much mis-and dis-information on the web. However, your visitors will stick around to read what you say – especially when you back it up with references – even links to references!

  25. Yes, grammar counts. Spelling and punctuation, too. Sure, most people won't care if you use except instead of accept. But some will. And they'll draw the rightful conclusion that if your site text isn't dead-on, maybe other aspects of your business are off target.

  26. Provide shopping carts. Again, obvious, but you'd be surprised how many sites don't offer shopping carts – even though the software is OSS!. Without a shopping cart, the user has to write down all product info – way too much trouble.

A good shopping cart program will enable visitors to view cart contents, change quantities and delete items at any time.

  27. Slap security all over your site. Still more than one-half of all buyers won't buy online because they're afraid of getting ripped off. There are plenty of trust building tools like Verisign and BBBonline. Make sure your visitors and buyers know your site is secure – or they're gone.

  28. Offer a "Track Your Order" feature. Just another reason to get the visitor back on site. "Hey, as long as you're here, we have these on sale for the next two hours."

  29. Expand the viewers scope. You sell canoes online and you're doing okay. Well, put up a couple of informational articles on the joys of sea kayaking just before bringing out a new kayak product line. You can't always be sure what the visitor wants. Sometimes the visitor doesn't even know. But you can tell him or her, provide some interesting reading, some food for thought and, if all falls into place, generate a kayak sale.

  30. Tweak. Not every bird flies. Use site metrics analysis software to determine which features readers find appealing and which are ignored. Then, it's just a matter of building on the good stuff and dropping the unseen.
It's rare to get it right the first time, but tweaking will improve site performance and links popularity over time. And, the more visitor traffic and page views, the more successful the site.

So, once you've got them on site, keep them there with interesting, easy-to-find information that's relevant to the visitor's needs and wants. That's what makes conversion ratios skyrocket.

Flash developer is a high-demand job

Steve Cucinotta's job lets him work with state-of-the-art software, create the latest Facebook applications and collaborate with equally cutting-edge co-workers.

And if that's not enough, consider this: His office has a Foosball table.

Cucinotta, 27, works in the Hollywood office of the marketing firm Sapient, developing animated Web content using software like Adobe Flash.

And his skills are in demand: Industry insiders say the hottest fields in the tech world include those, like Cucinotta's, that help companies market themselves on the Web.

While many Flash developers have college degrees, it's not necessarily a requirement. Many get hired just from learning Flash on their own or after taking a few Web development and design classes. Becoming an expert with the programs can be a part of on-the-job training.

What is a requirement, however, is natural creative talent and a problem-solving spark.
