Web Design Simplicity And Focus

You turn the instructions over looking for more information, but come back to the singular line, “Put contents together completely.”

No matter how long you try to put the watch together you will find it virtually impossible without step-by-step instructions.

Unlike a manual for a watch, web design can be constructed in a variety of ways using the same components. For instance the layout can be constructed in a variety of ways, the color scheme can be original to your own personality and tastes and you determine how large or small the site needs to be.

Web Design is often pursued like a person seeking to build a home out of spare lumber. You keep hammering and patching using whatever you come across in the hopes the site is better for your diligence.

Web building software can allow you to experiment, but articles such as this one can help point you to better tools and quality construction products.

Knowledge-Rich Content

The use of value added content for your site is impressive to both consumer as well as search engines. The consumer values your interest in passing along information may prove useful in understanding your products and services and how best to use what you offer. Search engines value the use of keyword specific content in determine the rankings of your site.

Ease of Navigation

Seek to make sure site visitors can get from one place on your website to another in the fewest clicks possible. Make clean avenues of navigation a high priority for web design.

Knowing When Not to Overdo it

Many websites attempt to develop their website into something bigger and better than anything you may have seen before. They may include flash and flash animation along with other extravagant design elements. In the end the site can seem with sights, sounds and colors that can leave some feeling a little green. Over development of a site is really not essential to the ultimate success of the site. Keeping things clean and attractive my do more good than developing a stage and insisting that 12 acts perform at the same time.

Decide What’s Important

In your web design you may want to place a variety of items that you find personally fulfilling, but it is important to determine if those items are a clean fit to the overall focus of the site. If they don’t fit you might be interested a secondary personal site that can be linked from your primary site so visitors can get to know more about you and the things you value as personal interest dictates.

Get Out the Red Pen

Be willing to edit heavily. Strip your site of all the non-essentials. This could be content, photos, excessively long product descriptions or other content. Ask yourself if the site can scan your content easily. Include headings, subheadings and bullet points when possible to assist them in this goal.

Find every reason possible to allow your customer to remain keyed in to your site. Web design begins and ends with an eye toward simplicity and focus.

Not All Web Browsers are Created Equal

You might not have given it much thought, but the browser your website is viewed on can completely change its appearance. Today there are two main types of browsers: Internet Explorer and Firefox. The purpose of this week's article is not to get you to change over to Firefox, listing about why it has tabbed browsing, blocks popups, and is generally more stable. No, today we will discuss how the difference between Internet Explorer and Firefox affect your website.

If you haven't recognized yet by the tone of this email, Internet Explorer 6 (IE 7 is getting better) is a curse on browsing the internet. Besides being a regular target for hackers and bugs, IE has a difficult time loading webpages the way they should be displayed. If you are designing a standard website with flat images you're fine for the most part, but as soon as you start trying to work with transparent images, or arrangements of images that make your site look polished, Internet Explorer puts the caibosh on your dreams of layered images by filling in any transparent screen with an ugly gray box.

Also if you ever want to line up your site's content using tables and you would like to left justify your content, sometimes IE doesn't recognize this and centers all your content until you go into the code and figure it out. Firefox, on the other hand is great, it shows the page the way it was made to be seen, without silly images glitches and the like.

I know that many of you are saying to yourselves: "but hey! aren't there are other browsers out there like Netscape or Safari?" Basically they are all falling in line with Firefox's platform and are far less used than Firefox or IE. The stark facts remain, until Microsoft stops installing IE on applications of windows, we will continue to have cross-browser conflicts. At present, 54% of the visitors to QTweb.ca use Internet Explorer.

So what does that mean for you and your website? Not a heck of a lot, if you are a client of QT Web Designs - since we constantly check your website against defects on all current and past versions of major browsers and try to build your site in a way that is accessible and consistent for all. Contact us today if you would like us to see how your site works across several different browser platforms. If you are designing a site yourself, our best advice is to always preview your site on multiple browsers since you never know how it might translate.

About Author : QT web designs, we’re in the business of building websites and we know that your site is really only as good as the business it generates for you. SEO Friendly Web Designing Tips

  1. Avoid creating menu on the left-hand side of a website . If unavoidable, an alternative way is to put some text with rich keywords at the top or above the left-hand menu so that this text will be the first thing to be read by search engines.
  2. Headlines are rated more important than the rest of the web page by search engines . To take advantage of this, you should have your keywords in the page headline. Since the header tag (h1) is quite large, you should format it to make it smaller.
  3. Every page should contain the ????title???? and ????description???? tags with good keywords to describe the page content. The number of words for the title should not exceed 9 and that for the description should not be more than 20 words in order to keep within the limits of most search engines.
  4. Try not to use Flash when possible . Flash cannot be read by the search engines to date and will cause slow page loading time and make people run away. If you really have a reason to use flash, try to make it smaller (e.g. as a flash header) and leave other area of your website for keyword-rich content.
  5. Think twice on how to use graphics . Make them relevant to your content and use an alt tag with relevant keywords for search engines to read as they cannot read graphics and also for your visitors so that they can have something to read when waiting for the graphics to load.
  6. Do not only use images to link out . You should always use text links to link out to important content on your web site. Spiders can follow image links, but like text links more though.
  7. Avoid using frames . Some search engines cannot spider web pages with frames at all. For the other search engines that can, they can have problems spidering it and sometimes they too cannot index the web page.

Web Design Tips: Basic CSS for Headers

How your site looks matters. Even subtle improvements—like using fonts or colors that compliment your theme—can have a positive effect on how consumers rate the trustworthiness of your store.

According to a 2003 Stanford University study of 2,440 people, 46.2 percent of online shoppers gauge the credibility of an ecommerce site by how professional and eye-pleasing the site looks. In fact, rightly or wrongly, appearance is even more important to shoppers than the presence of a security banner promoting hacker or credit card safety.

In this edition of Web Design Tips, a recurring Practical Ecommerce feature, I will show you the ins and outs of basic header formatting using a cascading style sheet (CSS) and HTML. This feature is aimed at HTML and CSS novices who have very little design experience.

Your Website Content Plan

In the early days, the internet was known as the "Information Highway." Why? Because the internet is an incredible source of information, and seeking information is the primary reason people are searching the internet.

The information you provide on your website is critically important to its success. While a well designed site is important, it is not enough. Your customers must be able to find the information that they came to your site looking for, they must be able to find it easily, and they must be able to understand it easily. If your information is not relevant to them, if it is not easy to find, or not easy to understand, they will quickly leave your site.

Prior to developing or redesigning your website, you should have a strategy in place, which details the purpose of your site, the content sections it will contain, and the target customer. With this key information, you can begin to develop your content plan. Here are several questions to consider in doing so:

What do you do?

The home page of your website should make it clear what you actually do, without being overcrowded with too much information. First impressions are made within a few seconds, so if the viewer can't quickly figure out what your site is about, they will just as quickly leave. On a similar subject, generally, Flash introductions should be avoided on business sites. If the customer is trapped into watching a "movie" about your company before they can gain access to the information that they came for, chances are good that they won't wait.

What are your customers' problems?

People don't buy products, they buy benefits. Describe your products or services in terms of the benefits that they offer to the customer, or of being the solution to the customer's problem. Customers want the W.I.I.F.M. (what's in it for me?)

What is your competitive advantage?

What makes your product or service different from your competitors? Customers want to be reassured that they are making a wise decision in dealing with you.

What do your customers need to know before making a decision?

Think about what questions people usually ask when they contact your company through other means. What do potential customers ask when they telephone for information? What do they ask your salespeople? What is most important to them about your product or service? Ensure that your information is focused on your customers, and on answering these questions. Chances are very good that the first thing your customer wants to know is NOT what your company mission statement is - so don't put this on your home page.

Who are you?

While it is not generally the first thing people want to know, if you have offered them the solution to their problems and answered their questions, they may want to know about you. (If your product is clearly yourself - e.g. as a keynote speaker, stand up comedian, etc., then who you are should probably get top billing.)

How can customers contact you?

The ultimate purpose of most business websites is to provide enough information to potential customers in order for them to make a decision to purchase your products or services. If they have gotten this far, and then they can't figure out how to contact you, you will lose the sale. This is important even if you are selling your products or services directly on line - customers may have additional questions, and they also feel more confident in making an on line purchase from a company that appears to have a physical presence. You may include your contact information on every page of your site, or at least ensure that every page of your site has a "Contact Us" button that links to a page including the ways you can be contacted (office address, local and toll free phone numbers, fax number, e-mail address, store or branch locations if applicable.)

A professionally designed website, providing clear, relevant, well organized information is essential to achieving success with your on line strategy.

Information Technology Keys Web 2.0 Deployments

Individual technologies still see uneven awareness among IT professionals. Junior staffers often are the ones who are aware of the most cutting-edge Web 2.0 tools, while CIOs and senior managers are more likely to be unaware or skeptical. This dichotomy is changing; Forrester has seen an increasing number of CIOs set the Web 2.0 agenda.

IT departments are taking a more active role in the acquisition and deployment of Web 2.0 technologies, according to Forrester Research. Budgetary controls, the need for integration and technical skills, and the growing importance of Web 2.0 tools are all putting IT departments in the driver's seat.

"Technology product managers and marketers will need to not only deal with these departments but also appeal to them outright," says Forrester's G. Oliver Young. "Those that can do so most effectively stand to close more deals, shorten the sales cycle and grow deployments more easily."

Forrester recently conducted an online survey of 262 IT professionals to find out how IT departments view Web 2.0 tools and what role these departments play in their adoption. Among the findings:
