NEW DELHI: In a small basement office in south Delhi, some 20 designers are busy sketching the outlines of new product lines for global giants — the likes of Whirlpool and Reckitt Benckiser — and, in the process, redesigning the face of outsourcing in India.

“While some of these products are being designed with the Indian consumer in mind, a major chunk is for the global audience,” says a 20-something designer, working on a new washing machine design.

Offshoring of jobs to India — which started off with callcentres and back-office jobs like accounting — has today spread to include high-end product design work and even packaging and graphic designs . As manufacturers look at reducing costs and product development cycles, India is fast emerging as the new-age design board for MNCs.

The result: MNCs like Whirlpool, GE, LG, Philips and Bosch are setting up research and design centres in India. And some others like Reckitt are offshoring design work to Indian design houses.

“Outsourcing design jobs to India started in a small way, but is going to be big. This is the latest trend in the world of manufacturing. A product is today conceived in the US, designed in India, manufactured in China and sold in markets across the globe,” says Anuj Prasad, chief designer at Delhi-based Desmania Design.

6. New graphic look/treatment: The Library’s redesigned web site will be attractive, modern, and solicit users to visit and revisit.
7. The site design will be consistent throughout, with each section reinforcing the whole. The use of photographs, typefaces, and graphic elements should remain relatively uniform throughout. The design will complement the Library’s existing brand, logo, and color scheme.
8. Implement Drupal to simplify staff processes for content creation, updating, and maintenance.
9. The new web site must be flexible, scalable, and adaptable to future needs of the Library and its users.
10. Provide full reporting and analysis on use of the site and web site traffic (e.g., Google Analytics).
11. Include the ability to incorporate multi-media content, pod casts, archived sound and video related to library programs, training, and events.
12. The new web site, including domain names, design, logo, images, products, and information, shall become our property.

Microsoft Fires up Free Tools for Developers

Microsoft on Thursday launched its WebsiteSpark programme, intended to encourage web developers to use the company's tools and technologies.

Like the startup-focused BizSpark, and the student and educational DreamSpark, WebsiteSpark gives small web design companies 'no upfront cost' access to Microsoft tools and technologies for three years, with companies paying just $100 (£61.81) to participate at the end of that period.

"We're hoping to enrol agencies that have had little or no contact with Microsoft," said William Coleman, WebsiteSpark lead for the UK, when describing Microsoft's plans for the programme.

Unlike BizSpark, which is restricted to new businesses building on Microsoft technologies, WebsiteSpark has a more open approach, and any design house with fewer than 10 employees is eligible, Coleman noted. "There's a lot of trust in this," he said, noting that the only commitment participants need to make is to deploy one website on Windows technologies within the first six months.

Taken separately, the tools in the programme would cost a lot more than $100 over three years. Companies get access to Microsoft's web design and development tools, with three licences of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, two of Microsoft Expression Web 3 and one of Microsoft Expression Studio 3.

Web Design Tips: Combining jQuery Effects and Plugins For A Great Marketing Effect

The lightweight (small file size) and concise jQuery library makes it relatively easy to add interactive effects and merchandising to just about any ecommerce website.

In this edition of "Web Design Tips," I will quickly show you how to combine a few jQuery effects and the jCarousel jQuery plugin to create a merchandising section near the top of a sample page. This merchandising section will show four products at a time and slide to the left, revealing additional products every three seconds. When a visitor aims his mouse pointer at one of the product images, the slider will stop and display a brief product description for that item.

For the example in the video, I used Jan Sorgalla's excellent jCarousel plugin.

To start, I downloaded the most recent version of the plugin (version 0.2.3 at the time) and got a zip file full of great stuff—CSS, a couple of images, and three JavaScript files, including the jQuery library version 1.2.3.

The most recent version of jQuery at the time of writing was version 1.3.2, but unfortunately jCarousel did not function as expected when I tried to use it with the newest jQuery library. This incompatibility is not a huge problem, but can come into play if we were making use of other plugins or effects that specifically relied on the newer version of the jQuery JavaScript library

We are an Ireland based organization, looking for qualified and experienced service provider to deliver an e-learning design solution. We would like to convert a series of existing face-to-face courses from their current format into e-learning.
Scope of Services:

1. Service Provider needs to design and produce Web 2.0 based e-learning solution.
2. Service Provider needs to convert our existing face-to-face courses from their current format (PowerPoints and Word documented notes and other related, published course materials) into engaging e-learning.
3. Using our online course script template, service provider needs to produce a script and PowerPoint storyboard for the course modules which will outline the content of each module, including all additional learning objects, incorporated text, images, video, interactivity such as quizzes, simulations, flash animations and other features.
4. Service Provider needs to create or source a range of media which will help our tutors to be able to interact with participants in a forum which is held (along with the course) in our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
5. Service Provider needs to submit all the original files, including MS PowerPoints in their original file type.
6. Service Provider should make a note future updates, corrections and revisions may be required by us at a later date (for up to three years).
   

We are looking for best proposals and payment terms are negotiable. Interested service providers are requested to contact us electronically on or before 23rd September 2009 by 11:00 Hrs. Netvibes creates web design tools for everyone For those who wish to customize their web pages but have little design knowledge or training, Netvibes, a popular personal web portal, has just produced Netvibes Theme Publishing, a suite of online tools that makes basic page creation easy.

"Netvibes offers designers the best of all worlds: live drag-and-drop layouts and page publishing, deep built-in content libraries and user interactivity - and now with our new Theme Publishing - complete control over every design aspect of their pages," said Netvibes CEO Freddy Mini.

The new tools are designed to make two essential tasks easy. The first is page creation, which the tools facilitate by allowing for the selection of elements such as colors, layouts and backgrounds with no more than a few clicks. The second is exporting, which is also made simple so that themes designed using the new Netvibes tools can be used on any website of the user''s choice without much effort.

For advanced designers, there is an XML-based theme API that allows users to create animated themes.

As more control is offered to web users via tools like these, web designers must increase their knowledge of the latest services and learn to incorporate them into their set of services.
