Making Money Online Through Web Designing

Internet is a boon for people looking for money making opportunities. Ideas which were impossible to execute a few years ago can now be used to generate money online. Web designing is one of such ideas which can be used to make a steady income. Even if you have a full time job but are good at web designing you can use this skill to generate a sizeable income.

The popularity of the Internet means that there are hundreds or even thousands of websites cropping up each day. These websites are not only being launched by corporations but also by individuals interested in launching their services or products. Individuals cannot always afford to hire the services of big web designing establishments. This is where you can step in. Many people making money through web designing are not necessarily programmers or related to the technology industry. Many of these people started off by using web designing for fun or to make their own websites. So if you are one of them here is how you can use this skill to make money.

There are two ways to make money using your web designing skills. The first way is to find employment with a company. If you are assuming that employment with a company would include commuting to and fro and being physically present at the place of work, you are wrong. Many companies are hiring web designers across the globe and your team, member may very well be sitting across the Atlantic yet you may be working on the same project. Most companies that hire web designers from across the world usually also have options for part time employment. So your part time endeavors will not encroach on your full time job. Payment is usually fixed in these cases and depends on the number of hours that you put in ach week. Most companies are not necessarily looking for high end degrees. Rather your success as a designer will be based on your creativity and your expertise in using various web designing software’s like Flash, 3D etc and languages like HTML, DHTML and XML.

The other option is to start working as a freelancer. There are numerous freelancing websites like rentacoder.com, elance.com, getafreelancer.com and scriptlancer.com to name a few that have web designing jobs. Here your payment is made on a per assignment basis. The buyer will post the project details and the approximate amount that he intends to pay for the project. You can place a bid on the project and if the buyer accepts it you can start working on the project. It is very important to have a portfolio of some of your work, so take some time out to create a few samples of your work which can be sent to the potential clients.

When you work on these sites it is extremely essential to collect good reviews. A satisfied customer will have no problems leaving a good feedback and the vice versa also hold true. Since a bad review will stay on your record for ever it is imperative that you deliver your work as promised and on time to avoid bad reviews.

Also don’t be disheartened if your first few bids are not accepted. These sites usually have a lot of old players with an established track record and most clients will be inclined to opt for them. This doesn’t mean that you don’t stand a chance, lowering your price is a good way to attract your clients. Once you have done a few projects getting your own website would serve you well. If you think you have more clients than you can handle you can always hire additional help through these sites.

It is important to always provide your clients with the best and the most upgraded service at an affordable rate to be successful in this line of work. most clients will flood you with repeat assignments once they are satisfied with your caliber of work. Just like any other business, web designing also needs dedication, hard work and team work and there is no reason why you cannot make a good income out of it if you are willing to put in some effort.

5 Things to Consider Before Choosing a Website Design Firm

It seems that everybody knows somebody that does “website design”. The term can refer to anyone from a high school student working on the weekends between book reports to an established professional website designer. Because of this, you need to be careful when choosing a website design company . Choosing the wrong individual or firm can mean the difference between having a website that turns out sales and ending up with a website that turns off customers. You need to do your due diligence when you sit down with your designer (or web design firm) to ascertain the level of competency and professionalism they have. It is important that business owners ask the following five questions in your initial conversation with any potential web design firm or individual.

  1. Can you show me your work?

Web design companies will tell you that they have done wonderful work for fantastic clients but ask for a list of client names and website addresses. This is the very first thing that you should do and will set the tone for the initial conversation. Reputable firms have a gallery or portfolio of websites that they have designed. This is where the proof is in the pudding. Take the time to actually go to the sites and check them out. Take note on how the site looks, how clear the site’s purpose is and how the site ranks in search engines. It is acceptable to call the design firm’s past clients and ask how their overall experience was during the design process and after the website design services were performed. If you hear a common negative theme, you may want to consider moving on to a different firm but keep in mind that there are two sides to every story and you should check with the firm to verify the validity of the negative comments.

  2. Can you see the project through to completion?

You’ve seen the work, now let’s find out who’s going to be doing it. It is very common for web design firms to use contracted web designers to assist with overflow and you should ask about this up front. You’ll want to know that this firm has the resources to be able to continue the project if that contracted employee leaves. Similarly, This if you choose to go with a self-employed web designer and that person gets sick, leaves or becomes uncooperative, you have nowhere to turn. Web design firms usually have multiple employees and a chain of command to ensure your concerns are addressed. Just be sure to clarify what will happen should the person working on your project become unavailable.

  3. How much will this cost?

Cost is a sensitive issue to any website design firm. It’s not unusual for to pay anywhere from $800-$8,000 for a 20 page static website design, depending on the level of design and functionality included. I always consider the level of work the firm can produce, as well as the relationship

Mozilla Labs Scopes Out the Future of the Web

Recent activity from Mozilla Labs has been focused on the future of the browser--and a world in which the browser is pretty much the operating system. Other browser vendors--including Microsoft, Opera and Google--are hot on its heels.

Lots of people talk about the future of the Web—about what types of applications and services we will see in the coming years. But what about the browser itself? How will future browsers interact with sites and applications? Will we even have browsers as we know them today, or will everyone use browser-like single-purpose applications to access different areas of the Web?

One company very concerned with the answers to these questions is Mozilla. After all, the browser is pretty much the only product the organization has.

The unit of Mozilla whose mission is to look toward the future is Mozilla Labs. This is where many of the features and capabilities currently found in the Firefox browser first make their appearance, as do other, more stand-alone applications such as Prism, which was recently released in beta.

In recent weeks, there has been a lot of news and activity coming out of Mozilla Labs. And all of this activity has been focused on the future of the browser.

What Does It Take to Become a Graphic Web Design Expert?

Graphic web design is a highly lucrative profession, because the World Wide Web is quickly becoming the most important tool any organization, business, or individual has to get a message out to the public. Many of today's graphic designers are almost entirely self-taught, and this is entirely possible to do, but if you want to be viewed as an expert, you will need some formal education and on-the-job training.

Internal Qualifications

Anyone can pursue a degree in graphic design, but not everyone has what it takes to be a graphic web designer. Individuals who do well in this career must be creative, because every website is going to be different. They also must be good communicators, because they must be able to talk to clients in order to determine what their exact needs or desires are, even when clients are not always sure what it is they want. An ability to put ideas into visible forms is a must, and web designers who pursue graphic arts must also be skilled with using computers, web interfaces, graphics software, and design software. Problem solving skills are another must for this field. Finally, graphic web designers have to have an eye for detail.

Formal Education

Graphic designers absolutely must have a bachelor's degree in graphic arts. Those who want to use their skills to design websites may want to minor in IT or computer sciences, if possible. The major needs to be graphic arts, however, because this is the most complex part of the work.

A typical graphic arts program will include the following courses or studies:

Principles of design Computerized design Studio art Printing techniques Web site design Commercial graphics production

For potential graphic designers who already have a bachelor's degree, a two-year associates degree in graphic design may be sufficient, provided it comes from a professional school.

In addition, graphic web designers must keep themselves current on the software used to design websites. Because this is constantly changing, these professionals often pursue continuing education through seminars, training programs, and webinars that show them how to use the newest programming.

Mozilla to Designers: Help Us Build Better Firefox Tabs

Mozilla Labs is challenging Web designers to help it find a more innovative way to represent browser tabs.

The Mozilla Labs Design Challenge: Summer 09 aims to find a better way to create, navigate and manage multiple Web sites within the same browser instance, according to a Web site about the contest.

Mozilla, which came up with the concept of tabs in its Firefox browser as a way to manage browsing multiple Web pages at the same time, said that tabs worked well when people were only using them to look at about 10 Web sites simultaneously. But now, when as many as 20 or more "parallel sessions" on the Web are common, tab technology isn't holding up.

"If you have more than seven or eight tabs open they become pretty much useless," the company said on the Web site. "And tabs don't work well if you use them with heterogeneous information. They're a good solution to keep the screen tidy for the moment. And that's just what they should continue doing."

Designers can participate in the challenge by submitting a design mockup -- "anything from a napkin drawing, to a wireframe, to a polished graphic" -- and a video also explaining how the technology works, according to the site.

Web Analytics vs. Web Design: Why Can't We All Just Get Along?

One of the many great discussions at last week's JBoye conference in Philadelphia centered on Douglas Bowman leaving Google for Twitter because of his belief that Google has an over-reliance on web analytics data for making design decisions. Bowman was Google's lead designer. For the details, see the article in the May 9 issue of the NY Times.

This is a high-profile standoff around the value of analytics vs. personal opinion when it comes to web design, but the underlying conflict is quite common. Those on the design side may say that Google has gone too far with data, I know for a fact that design decisions being made by "the boss" on a unilateral basis is a common scenario. You know the one I'm talking about....where "the boss" says he wants the color red, even though the professional designers he has hired contend that the color should be blue. And even though there's user experience testing to back the professional designers' decisions.

How to Choose a Custom Website Design That’s Right for You

As anyone who owns a business knows, having a strong online presence is fundamental to your success. Whether you own a small or mid-size business or manage a large corporation, creating a custom website design to clearly and succinctly represent your company on the web is one of the most important investments you can make. Developing an image, creating a lasting impression, improving your company’s visibility, and implementing a website that will maximize each user’s experience are a few core goals you may want to think about when considering an ecommerce web site design. Here are a few tips to get you started when creating a checklist for your new website:

  1. Design a homepage that draws people to your company: Let’s face it - first impressions are everything, and your homepage is the first place your customers will land when they visit your site. Be sure to include your business logo and company name at the top of each page. You will also want to leave room for clearly-labeled menus on the side or top of the page, allowing customers to navigate throughout your site. Use your home page to tell customers what your company offers, but don't crowd the page with too much information - clean and simple layouts are usually the most visually appealing.
  2. Let them know who you are: Be sure to include an "About Us" page, which will give you a chance to identify your business and inform your customers what your company is all about, as well as interesting facts and other relevant information. You will also want to mention your company objective here, including a mission statement. Most importantly, add your history, how you got started and how long you have been in business. You’ll also want to include information about the main employees of your company, who they are and what they do.
  3. Let them know how to reach you: Be sure to include a "Contact Us" page so that customers can reach you via your preferred mode of communication – clearly list your business name, address, phone number and email address.
  4. Make sure each page is easy to use: Although it may seem obvious, it’s important to keep your page layouts clean, concise and to-the-point. We suggest implementing clear fonts, providing useful information (vs. filling up pages with extraneous verbiage), leaving plenty of white space and including links to other pages. Keep your site pages simple yet informative - i.e., easy for people to scan it quickly for information without being bombarded with unnecessary images or content.
  5. Create a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page: Customers will scan this page to find answers to common concerns. Make sure this page links to your "Contact Us" page in case customers have more questions.
