Mozilla proposes 3D graphics standard

Firefox firm teams with Khronos Group to bring 3D content to web browsers

Firefox developer Mozilla has teamed up with the Khronos Group, which works to achieve open standards for graphics, to bring 3D content to web browsers.

In response to a proposal from Mozilla, Khronos has created an Accelerated 3D on Web working group that will consider various approaches to creating a graphics standard, including the exposure of Open GL ES 2.0 capabilities within an ECMAScript container such as a web browser.

Mozilla has offered to chair the group, and will include the standard as the base functionality in the release after Firefox 3.5.

Khronos has opened up the development process to any company that wants to take part and gain early access to draft specifications before the public release. Google has demonstrated early interest, offering its expertise in graphics and web development.

"With more and more content moving to the web, and JavaScript getting faster every day, the time is right to create an open, general purpose API for accelerated 3D graphics on the web," said Google engineering director Matt Papakipos.

In many countries, the mobile handset is the primary means to get online. For example, there are more than 60 million mobile users in Turkey, but only around 6 million PC broadband subscribers. Similarly in emerging markets, the high price of PCs and lack of broadband networks make the mobile the single point of contact with the Internet world.

Recent reports by Nielsen indicate that in Britain, mobile Internet traffic grew 25% in the second half of 2008, whilst PC traffic grew only 3%. In the U.S., mobile Internet traffic jumped 30% in the second quarter of 2008 alone. Much of this growth is undoubtedly driven by the Apple iPhone, yet this is just one of many thousands of devices available today, and it only represents a relatively small percentage of the total device landscape.

According to Nielsen, the iPhone represents about 1.5% of devices in use, and even the top 10 only represents around 20% of the subscriber population (see the table below). The remaining 80% represents a significant majority of potential customers using devices ranging from smart phones to more basic devices. Looking further afield to Europe, the top device mix is completely different, with the iPhone and Nokia devices dominating the market.

When startups and established businesses alike are looking to cut corners and save money, graphic design is usually at the top of their chopping block. A website is often the first point of contact consumers have with a company. And just like in life, the first impression really does matter. Consciously or subconsciously, consumers take everything they see into account before deciding where to invest their dollars and their loyalty: colors, logo, layout, quality of images, ease of navigation, style, tone, etc. And then make logical and/or emotional assumptions based on what they see “This company’s website is just so-so quality. I don’t know if I can trust their products/services will be of quality too.” And if a company has consumers doubting, they’ve undoubtedly lost their business. Design matters to the bottom line.

A great example of a successful website redesign is the Pilates Studio Tiburon in Marin County. Their original website was not doing its part to bring in business and the branding was inconsistent with the actual studio space in terms of color, tone, messaging, etc. The new website needed to reflect the studio's supportive, community atmosphere, whimsical, serene, new-agey vibe, and, of course, the organic nature of Pilates. In working with them, I designed a simple, easy to navigate site, with custom illustration. The result is a design that is at once strong, organic, whimsical, and undeniably imaginative.

Web Design Tips: Compatibility with Older Browsers

As web technology advances and development standards evolve some web browsers are falling behind. Many lack the ability to support new technologies and file types or even provide the best available user experience. These lagging browsers put ecommerce businesses in something of a quandary. How do you offer customers the best possible user experience without leaving some of those customers behind?

In this edition of Web Design Tips, a recurring Practical eCommerce feature, I will (1) introduce and explain the trouble with old and noncompliant browsers and (2) describe two ways to manage browser compatibility issues, particularly for older versions of Microsoft's popular Internet Explorer web browser.

Thankfully there are a lot of web browsers available to suit the tastes and web surfing habits of just about any consumer. I like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. But I have friends who swear by Maxthon, Opera 9.6, or Safari (Safari 4 does have some nice features). And about 44 percent of Internet users surf using one of three available versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE).

While I like all of that variety, having so many browser options can be troublesome for web designers and developers since each browser could render your web site differently. What's more, as browsers change and improve over time they begin to manage JavaScript, deal with server calls, or render images differently, making it even more complex to design websites that look good on most browsers.
