7 of The Best Web Development Tutorial Sites on The Web

Today while blogging about the Outlook standards saga, I remembered how I wanted to write a post on the best tutorial sites on web design and development. One of the major reasons why standards aren’t adopted as much as they should have are because of lack of awareness and knowledge. And one of the main reasons why people are beginning to talk a lot more about standards it is because of Tutorial sites like the ones below. Essentially they serve these dual purpose of awareness and knowledge dissemination.

However, beyond being amazingly useful resources these sites also present some good business models for content oriented sites to pursue. So without further adieu, some of the best web design and development tutorial sites:

1. Echoecho

Back in the das when I was a young little boy excited about photoshop brushes and geocities, Echoecho was a frequent haunt. I have a feeling it is not updated anymore, but the site still has its beginner level tutorials and is an excellent resource for people to start off at.

2. W3Schools

W3Schools was the quintessential web designer/ developer resource , the fall back guy, man friday and other such expressions. Over a period it has set the standards regarding web standards and is one of the few completely free resources on the web. It also provides certifications and tests which make it a must visit for any budding designer.

3. Sitepoint

Though I discovered the articles and resources on Sitepoint quite late, I quickly became a huge fan of their content. Sitepoint is a complete web business repository actually and has tutotrials on everything from domains to site business strategy, not to forget scripting and coding. Excellent site.

10 best practices for horizontal web design

Some people don’t care for rules when it comes to usability, and with good reason. Not all sites are equal, and more importantly, not all audiences are the same. What’s right for a 15 year old might be very wrong for a 70 year old.

Personally I believe in a hybrid approach, whereby some of the fundamentals of web design should be set in stone, and adhered to. After that, it’s a horses for courses approach, where recommendations trump rules, which are in any case there to be challenged. Apart from white text on a white background of course. That would be stupid.

One of those rules that I would have until very recently placed in my top 25 usability fundamentals would be to avoid horizontal scrolling, at all costs. However, there seems to be a growing trend towards horizontal web design.

What we’re talking about here isn’t so much a problem where web designers have opted for fixed width layouts that are too wide for most people’s screens, but where sites have been designed to specifically provide a horizontal experience for users.

Horizontal design can work well in a number of circumstances. I have seen this approach used best for gallery sites, portfolio sites and – occasionally – for ultra niche retailers.

The control issue

There is a problem with horizontal sites, and it's to do with navigation and movement. In the same way that we do not always use the vertical scroller to navigate vertical websites, we do not want to be limited to hovering over fiddly horizontal scrollbars to move through a horizontal website.

For vertical sites I use the spacebar (which acts as ‘page down’) and the arrow keys more than I use the vertical scrollbar. The latter works (poorly) for horizontal sites, but the spacebar is redundant. On top of these controls we use on-page navigation aids to move around websites, and we use the mouse scroller. There are also page up and page down buttons to factor in. And no doubt a bunch of others that I don't personally use.

So at this point it is worth remembering Steve Krug’s ‘Don’t Make Me Think’ mantra. I'm normally forced to think each time I visit a horizontal website. Before figuring out whether or not it is a good idea to reinvent the wheel it is worth considering whether or not you actually need a horizontal website. I mean, do you? Really? While I admire anybody who wants to step away from the flock, the user experience should not be compromised on the basis of simply wanting to do something different.

What can you do?

Many horizontal websites simply rely on the browser’s scroller. In my world this sucks. But what’s worse is to kill the browser’s scroller altogether (as many do), leaving the user to figure out exactly how to use a website. That sucks even more, especially when the navigation controls appear are also AWOL. We're all cognitive misers, remember, and we won't jump through too many hoops.

Good Web Design Tips

Learn the principles of good design before heading further down the road to creating your site.

Whether you have decided to hire a professional Web designer or use one of the template services mentioned in my

last column to create your site, good design is essential to running a successful business on the Web.

Google the term ''good Web design'' and you'll find myriad websites devoted to the topic with advice on how to create perfect Web pages. Web design is largely subjective. While many experts differ on what really makes good Web design, there are a few fundamentals most can agree on:

  • Think before you design -- Create a blueprint of the site you want before you pay that Web designer you've just contracted or begin working with favorite templates you've found online. Sit down, get out a piece of paper and actually sketch what you want your site to look like. How would it function? What would your site's key pages look like? Where will your navigation bar be? What colors will you use? What content areas will be on your site? This is a valuable first step. Your sketch will serve as a road map and quick reference guide as you implement your design.
  • Choose content carefully -- Whether your site will be used to sell products or not, the content on it is important. It has to be high-quality and informative, particularly if you are promoting yourself as an expert in a particular field. Don't let misspelled words, shoddy grammar and poor sentence structure be the reason you lose a reader or customer.
  • Color your site with care -- People respond to color. Choose soothing earth tones, such as forest green and gray, for your design.
  • Name your pages properly -- To optimize your site's pages, be sure to name the URLs for each page correctly. Don't use symbols and numbers, which aren't search-engine friendly. Instead, use the name of the page, which will rank your site much higher in search results. A good example of a properly named page is www.Miami Herald.com/business, which indicates it's the business page of the Miami Herald. A poorly named page would look something like this: www.miami herald.com/?54=27#8=617, which tells you nothing about the page and is hard for search engines to index the site. I'm guilty of this with www.Chick Centric.com, but I'm working to fix it.
Most services that allow you to design a site using a template will generate URLs for your pages that have letters and numbers, but a fair number of them allow you to rename your pages.

Web Design Tips: Cufón is a Fast Font Replacement Solution

An easy-to-implement JavaScript called Cufón allows web designers to quickly embed visually interesting fonts on their web pages, opening up new opportunities for typographical design elements.

Every medium has constraints. For print, there are things like size, ink density, and paper quality. For video, even the best available HDTV only musters up about 2.1 megapixel resolution (HD 1080p is 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels). On the Internet, those constraints can be things like bandwidth, screen size, or—today's topic—fonts.

Every computer has some number of fonts installed. The most common of these are generally referred to as "web safe," meaning you can be pretty sure that if you specify one of these common fonts in your CSS or HTML, the person who visits your page will see the font face you defined. But this can be limiting. What if you want a custom font that almost no one will have installed?

In this "Web Design Tips," I am going to describe one possible way to do font replacement, and show you how to implement it with Cufón.

Web Design Tips: The Laws of Ecommerce Navigation Design

CSS, Flash, jQuery, and an arsenal of other powerful web techniques and technologies have unbound website design, creating the opportunity to develop either exceptional user interfaces or really frustrating ones.

Furthermore, the growth of "cookie-cutter" ecommerce templates (i.e., “insert your logo here”) has quelled site concepts with great potential and made some ecommerce pages as bland and tasteless as a papier-mâché popsicle.

To avoid the pitfalls of a site design that is too confusing, too ugly, or too experimental to be effective, the ecommerce site owner must strike a balance between leading-edge techniques and technologies, effectiveness, and aesthetics. So, in this edition of "Web Design Tips," I'll outline the laws for ecommerce site navigation design to help any ecommerce business.

Shoppers browsing to an ecommerce store don't want to be baffled by navigation. As I implied above, there are a lot of amazing things that you can do with site navigation that you shouldn't.

As a specific example, the agency Publicis & Hal Riney has developed site navigation that responds to gestures captured via web cam. The effect is stunning, and is an excellent way to demonstrate development talent. But as navigation, it is really frustrating. And if an ecommerce site deployed anything like it, I'd bet that they would never make a sale again.
