10 ways to prepare your website for Christmas

It's that time of the year again - with just 77 sleeps until Christmas, it's time for online retailers to start panicking about their key selling period.

While normal bricks and mortar retailers have the luxury of shutting up shop every night, the internet is open 24/7 and online retailers know their shopfronts require constant attention.

Good design, strong traffic infrastructure and perfect search engine optimisation are just a few of the problems online retailers face coming up to Christmas. Hal Pritchard, chief executive of online kitchenware retailer Everton Online, says e-retailers should already be thinking about their holiday strategies.

"Christmas is twice as busy as any other time, which makes it difficult from a logistical point of view. Preparations start during September and if you get that done, you'll survive. When you get into November and December, it's done, you can't change anything,"

Here are the top 10 tips from online retail experts in order to prepare your website for the Christmas season.

Type : Tender

Title : Website-Redesigning for Public Library

Estimated Budget : Looking For Best Proposals

Description:

We are a USA based organization, seeking proposals from qualified and experienced service provider to redesign our website and to develop a new platform to manage it. We are a medium sized public library serving 75,000 residents of the City. Our current website is difficult to navigate; design (particularly the graphics) has become outdated; does not meet current standards for accessibility; difficult for staff to further develop or adapt the current web site, contributing to a site; etc. We are looking to launch the redesigned web site to the public by July 1, 2010.
Scope of Services:

  1. Design intuitive information architecture with a focus on usability, accessibility, and ease of navigation. The web site design will be user centered.
  2. Accessibility: Users will be able to effectively and efficiently access the Library’s web site using all relevant versions of commonly used web browsers.
  3. Interactivity: Users will be able to interact with library staff and others users, participate in creation of content, and will be offered opportunities for personalization.
  4. Quality and scope of web site content reflects the same richness and breadth of service, programs, and collections that users find in the buildings and through outreach services. Redesign pages so that they are less text-driven and more open.
  5. Maximize the potential of the web. Use the web site redesign as an opportunity to develop a more comprehensive, systematic approach to library external relations, using tools such as RSS feeds, blogs, and an improved calendar to publicize library events in the community.
  6. New graphic look/treatment: The Library’s redesigned web site will be attractive, modern, and solicit users to visit and revisit.
  7. The site design will be consistent throughout, with each section reinforcing the whole. The use of photographs, typefaces, and graphic elements should remain relatively uniform throughout. The design will complement the Library’s existing brand, logo, and color scheme.
  8. Implement Drupal to simplify staff processes for content creation, updating, and maintenance.
  9. The new web site must be flexible, scalable, and adaptable to future needs of the Library and its users.
  10. Provide full reporting and analysis on use of the site and web site traffic (e.g., Google Analytics).
  11. Include the ability to incorporate multi-media content, pod casts, archived sound and video related to library programs, training, and events.
  12. The new web site, including domain names, design, logo, images, products, and information, shall become our property.

Seven key ingredients of effective business/non-profit websites

In today’s Internet-connected world, an organization’s online presence is in many ways even more important than their physical presence. There’s no denying the importance of a physical office to an organization in providing a place to meet, conduct business, and conveying an image. The scope of the physical office is, obviously, limited to those who drive by or enter the premises.

An online presence is generally available for everyone to see. The audience is wider and the attention span is shorter when dealing with an online audience.
In order to attract and maintain interest of customers, employees, and stakeholders and organization such as a business or non-profit organization must have an effective website. While website design is somewhat subjective, the key ingredients of an effective website are not. How well does your organization’s website measure up to the following?

• Attractive design – although general web design is subjective, a special web design prepared for your specific target audience is not. A website owner must understand their target audience and prepare a visual design that’s compelling and draws in interest.
