Reshaping Web Site Design

Retailers architect new ways to design features and functions that deliver improved business results

With a new treatment or a major feature going live every three weeks, there’s no room for complacency in VistaPrint Ltd.’s approach to web site design. Instead of speculating over how visitors might respond to a new application, VistaPrint, an online retailer of custom printing products, uses step-by-step planning and rigorous testing to design web pages that meet customer expectations and generate more business.

When VistaPrint recently updated its design gallery of templates that customers use to create personalized business cards and stationery, designers and marketing managers analyzed thousands of transactions and visitor sessions. VistaPrint then used the new analysis to design and launch a new gallery that has since helped the company acquire 4.5 million more customers overall and nearly double daily orders to about 33,000.

“We don’t guess at what our customers want out of a new design,” says VistaPrint senior director of user experience Jeff Prus. “We study their behavior and then design and test a new treatment that’s going to meet their expectations and ours.”

Tips to Locating Budget Web Hosting Easily Online

Budget Web hosting means any type of hosting service that is available at very low cost which is an affordable web hosting service that can be easily utilized by most of the people who want to create their own website or for people who are creating websites for the first time. In other words it can be said that budget web hosting is a kind of cheap web hosting plan which is offered by the hosting companies for those people who are entering into online business as newbie so at that moment they do not require special features or bandwidth or large disk space.

Operational Method of Budget Web Hosting

This type of low-cost web hosting plan is mostly available for a period of one year and this is quite suitable for new businessmen as they can easily create their own websites for displaying their product online and get enough time to develop the proper marketing process for their product so that they can easily establish their new business. The strategy that is utilized by the web hosting companies for charging the monthly fees for budget web hosting is very simple. The website owner has to divide the annual fees quoted by the company by twelve to obtain the total amount of monthly fees that has to be paid to the company for availing their services.

As a newbie it is beneficial to avail the services of the web hosting companies which have this facility as it will help the new website owner to put aside some of the basic worries of the technical issues like setting up their own server, monitoring the whole working process and other issues related to the server and several other issues which are connected with setting up the server for a new site. This will help the site owner to pay more attention towards his business or towards the development of the site along with proper uptime at a very nominal cost.

Choosing Budget Web Hosting Company

If you want to start your own website or want to create a new website for your company then it is necessary to chalk out a plan about your requirements so that while choosing the website company you can easily verify whether they are providing you all the facilities that is required by you for creating your website and if they have the facility for further development whenever you may need at a later stage. You should also verify whether the web hosting company has put up proper contact information like e-mail address, phone number or contact address.

If the company has not provided proper contact address then the services of that company should not be purchased as it'll create a lot of problems later on for you will not have any type of contact information if you develop any problem while setting up your website so you will not be able to avail their services. The web hosting company should also have the facility of providing their customers with a phone number that is toll-free so that all the people who are setting up their websites from different places of the world can contact them easily.

The other important things that has to be kept in mind while choosing an affordable web hosting company who is providing the facility of budget web hosting is to evaluate about the web hosting company's credentials. This can be easily done by evaluating the front page that is available when you visit the site of the web hosting company. By the help of this page you can easily evaluate whether the web hosting company is professional or not or are just offering their services as low-cost web hosting so that they can draw in more customers.

Verification about Other Offers by the Budget Web Hosting Company

As the website owner you have to verify other areas besides the financial matter while purchasing the services of budget web hosting company because getting the facility of low cost web hosting is not enough if you do not get the basic services that should be offered by the web hosting company irrespective of the fact which type of web hosting facility you are availing. The things that you have to primarily verify are the uptime that is provided by the company because it is very important that you should get maximum amount of uptime for inflow of good traffic.

Uptimes is of utmost necessity as it is the time when the company server is open or live which means that people will be able to visit your website as your site pages can be easily accessed by the visitors. The after sales service of the web hosting company is also very important as you will require market tools and free scripts and other supports for setting up your website and running it smoothly.

Microsoft Targets Adobe in Web-Design Software

Adobe Systems Inc. is facing increasing pressure from Microsoft Corp., which is using its deep pockets to challenge Adobe's dominance of Web design software.

Adobe's Flash software, which adds video and animation to Web sites, is at the heart of many popular Internet destinations. Retailers, media outlets and entertainment sites rely on Flash to make their sites interactive and to serve up advertisements.

But Microsoft has recently launched a new version of its competing Silverlight technology and has been aggressively courting the operators of popular Web sites and advertising agencies that are Adobe's core customers.

Netflix Inc. recently said it would use Silverlight to stream movies over the Internet. When CBS Corp.'s college sports group decided to build its Web site using Silverlight earlier this year, Microsoft chipped in free development and support that "reduced our costs tremendously," said Tom Buffolano, the CBS business unit's former chief. A CBS spokesman declined to comment.

Winning the war with Microsoft "is clearly the most important priority," said Adobe Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen.

Tips for Switching Web Hosts

It is quite common to switch from one web host to another. This may be necessary if your site grows to popularity and your current host can no longer meet its requirements. Perhaps they do not have enough storage space or bandwidth to support your content and traffic. Maybe you want to start another business but the current provider only allows you to host a single domain. Or maybe you found a company that is much more affordable. Whatever the case, before moving your content to another host, it important to plan ahead to make the transition as smooth as possible.

The first part of your plan, is to of course, find a new provider. After finding a web host that can support the needs of your new and improved site, the next thing you should do is backup the current content so that it can be transferred to the new server. Although you may want to change the look and feel of your site, a lot of your content may still be relevant so backing it up is critical.

After moving to the new host, it’s a good rule of thumb to use a redirect page from your old site to automatically forward visitors the new one. By doing this you can assure that your visitors can still access your site even if the IP address has not yet propagated over, something that will help to prevent the possible loss of sales. You should use this format for the first 48 hours following the move as it usually takes about that long for a new website to be listed on most domain servers over the web.

Here are a few more recommendations that will make your transition to a new host quick and easy:

  • Inquire within the new web hosting company to learn if they’re running on the Windows or Linux platform. This is very critical as incompatibility may cause problems when moving from the old host.
  • Find out approximately how much storage you’ll need for the files and content on your current website. Make sure the new host has enough space to support the further growth and development of your site.
  • Check to see how much bandwidth the new host offers. If your site has grown significantly, bandwidth is critical as your site can endure serious performance issues without enough of it.
  • Make sure the new host offers the same features you had before. In most cases, you’ll be looking for even more features. For instance, if your current site was published with Frontpage extensions, finding a new host with this feature will make creating your new website much easier.
  • Find out if the new provider uses a shared or dedicated server. While shared web hosting plans are pretty reliable, they are more likely to experience server issues due to the number of sites being hosted.
  • Lastly, look for reviews and customer feedback about the new hosting company before signing up. This will give you a good idea of what to expect.

Web Hosting Tips and Ideas

People who want to have a website, blog etc. will need a web hosting organization which provides an Internet storage facility. If you want others to see your website you will need one of these and depending on whether it is a commercial site or not will dictate how much you pay but it is possible to have this at no charge (with restrictions).

Many beginners start by using the free hosting services that are provided by many internet service companies; while they will have access to email facilities, basic websites and blogs, they will have to pay for a full service provider. However, if you're planning to expand you should shift to a paid service as free web hosting only gives you limited space and sub-domains for your site.

You may settle for a shared server (where you share your space with other website owners) and it is a good tip is to go for the shared hosting first. However, it is often a good idea to see if the company is reliable before this more costly option of a dedicated server is taken. Websites require a domain name (not necessarily supplied by the web hosting company)otherwise no-one will be able to find you; once this has been done your domain will be allocated a specific amount of space for you to store your website, etc.

Google Chrome's Out of Beta. Now What?

While other products are in beta for years, Google has turned Chrome into a final product in months. What does it have up its sleeve?

Just three months after the release of Chrome, Google is following through on its vow to remove the "beta" label from its upstart browser -- making it a rare final product from a company notorious for its seemingly endless beta cycles.

Since its inception, Chrome has served as a test bed for new browser technologies, such as security models, Web standards support and transfer protocols -- experiments that Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has said it hadn't wanted to attempt in connection with other, established open source efforts, like Mozilla Firefox. The company has issued 14 updates to its browser, almost at a rate of one per week since its release.

Now, with release 15, Google has dropped the beta label from Chrome, signaling that it considers the browser a "general availability," or final, product.

However, this doesn't mean that Chrome won't continue seeing improvements.

Graphic Design Tips

Great graphic design looks effortless, but it requires lots of attention to details. Think back to an eye-catching advertisement, publication, or flyer you saw recently. Do you remember why you liked it? Perhaps it was something specific like the use of a cool graphic or font. Or, more likely, the layout and the words worked together to create an eye-appealing, memorable message that you're still thinking about today.

A lot of thought, money, and skill probably went into that design. But you don't have to be a design guru to achieve expert results! Follow these five tips to create effective, professional-looking marketing materials for your small business.

Select appropriate font treatment: More is NOT better when it comes to fonts. Pick no more than two typefaces per document - one for headlines and one for body copy. Stick to a simple, clean font for easy body copy readability. Headline fonts can be a little more creative. For emphasis on certain words or phrases, use italics, boldface, or underlining sparingly. Also try to make the typeface match the personality of the service or product you're representing.

Use white space wisely: Just because the space is there doesn't mean you have to fill it! Good designs contain well-planned white space. ("White space" is simply the areas in a layout that are left bare - without text or graphics.) It gives the eye a break and helps to highlight the important points. Make sure to have enough space around the edges and in-between columns and articles. And remember that there is a fine line between not enough and too much white space. Consult well-designed magazines and ads or computer templates for layout inspiration and ideas.

Find effective graphics and photos: It's always better to use too few than too many graphics. One great graphic is so much better than four weak ones. Sometimes they are not even necessary. When you do use graphics and photos, make sure they help illustrate your point, rather than just inserting them to take up space. Likewise, be sure their sizes are appropriate to the space. Stick with high-quality graphics - in this age of affordable, quality clipart, there is no excuse to use any image that isn't perfectly clear and neat. Never use a "gif" file in a print document; those are created for web use only. Make sure the graphic element illustrates your main point - it's the first thing the reader sees, so it's important it portrays your message accurately. Lastly, don't mix differently styles of illustration or photography - keep a consistent look to create harmony.

Keep copy short and neat: Readers are more likely to read short sentences, paragraphs, and articles written as if you're having a friendly conversation. Break up large blocks of text with bullet points and subheads. Instead of using fancy multi-syllable complex vocabulary, use everyday words that your audience will understand. A good rule of thumb is to write at a sixth-grade reading level. Finally, always have someone else - whether a professional copy editor or a skilled friend - proofread your work. It's impossible to catch all your own typos.

Watch the flow: People generally read a page from top to bottom and from left to right. Draw people into the top left corner of your ad or newsletter with a headline or strong graphic. Then, pull their eyes down and through the text in the mid-section of the page, and finish up in the lower right corner. Picture a "Z" shape. Finally, be sure to include a "call to action" at the bottom to get the results you desire. For example, give readers your contact information and special offer, and tell them to "Call today!"

Ingredients For Great Web Design

There are few businesses that can afford to operate today without a web site. But if you’re not a web geek, you might feel intimidated by the idea of designing your own site. Here are some basic tips on good web site design from “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Creating a Website” by Paul McFedries:

Keep it simple. McFedries cautions against using every color, image or visual gadget available on your site. A well-designed site is a simple site. “You just need to avoid the most egregious graphical faults, such as ugly backgrounds that make text hard to read, colors that clash with each other and excessive use of fonts,” he writes.

Words matter. Pretty colors are nice, but “content is king.” If web users can’t find what they need or what is of interest to them on your site, a nice logo is wasted.

Keep a consistent message. Be sure to use the same color scheme from page to page and place important elements in the same place on every page.

Don’t hide the goods. Too many sites are way too confusing. Make the important stuff obvious, like how to contact you by mail, phone, e-mail or fax.

Be welcoming. McFedries recommends laying out “a virtual welcome mat” to make all the visitors to your site feel at home. The way to make it feel inviting is to have “good content and a consistent, easy-to-figure out layout” as well as “social elements,” including feedback forms and bulleting boards.

How To Design a Good Website

  • Your Web site should be well organized -- Create an outline before beginning the design process.
  • Web design tips Every graphic on a web page should be necessary -- Each graphic should relate to the text on that page, to the message being communicated, and to the audience.
  • Web design tips Background color should be easy on the eyes -- Some colors hurt the eyes and visitors to your site will leave quickly.
  • Web design tips Colored text should contrast with the background so that it is readable -- Don't lose sight of the fact that text on a page should be able to be read.
  • Web design tips Do not center all text on a page -- A large amount of centered text is difficult to read.
  • Web design tips Keep your copy short -- People don't have the time or patience to read large amounts of text from a computer monitor
  • Web design tips Keep width of text to about five inches -- Wide columns of text are difficult to read.
  • Web design tips If using audio files, or movies, give viewers a choice whether or not to use them.
  • Web design tips Don't use blue for regular text color -- Blue usually denotes links and can confuse the reader.
  • Web design tips Don't underline text for emphasis -- Underlined text usually signifies a link.
  • Web design tips Use motion sparingly! -- Motion should only be used when necessary to convey a message!
  • Web design tips Check readability of text -- Cut it and paste it into a Word document. Check for grammar and spelling.
  • Web design tips Always ask WHY you are putting certain information on the web -- Keep information short and sweet. If you want to give your viewers more information, create a pdf file for them to download.
  • Web design tips Always have contact information on your site -- Put your e-mail address, phone if necessary in a prominent location on your site.
  • Web design tips Use links to other sites that are relevant to yours -- You don't have to reinvent the wheel. There is a lot of information on the web that is relevant and can be helpful to visitors to your site.
