City unveils new website design

The city has a new look for its website located at www.cityofmadisonsd.com that includes noticeable changes in its design and, hopefully, easier online navigation for its users.

The redesigned website for Madison appeared online just Wednesday and some of the changes are immediately apparent as soon as the homepage shows up on the computer screen. Links to elected officials and city departments are located immediately under the heading along with a row of small photos that depict scenes from some of the city parks, downtown area, community center and library.

According to City Finance Officer Jeff Heinemeyer, Jen Eimers, the city's website manager, started working with GovOffice.com about three months ago to redesign the site.

Heinemeyer said GovOffice provides web hosting services to many cities.

"Visitors should find the new site easier to use, and it will contain all of the same information it used to have," Heinemeyer said.

A search box appears more prominently on the new web page design in the upper right corner of the homepage. The search box operates as the site's small search engine, allowing visitors to type in words such as electric department or zoning and find related information. Heinemeyer said the previous city homepage had a search box that was located less prominently at the bottom of the page.

The homepage also holds a traditionally-styled calendar in which visitors can click on a particular date to find city events or meetings. Users can also use commands to move back and forth through the months of the year.

Heinemeyer added that the separate city departments will have more flexibility in individually designing their web pages. The department personnel who work as webmasters will have more options in switching or adding photos and information.

GovOffice.com provides services to about 1,400 small and large communities across the United States. The company describes itself as as a website creation and content management resource for local governments. Its Internet products provide information to the public and make services more efficient

NEW DELHI: In a small basement office in south Delhi, some 20 designers are busy sketching the outlines of new product lines for global giants — the likes of Whirlpool and Reckitt Benckiser — and, in the process, redesigning the face of outsourcing in India.

“While some of these products are being designed with the Indian consumer in mind, a major chunk is for the global audience,” says a 20-something designer, working on a new washing machine design.

Offshoring of jobs to India — which started off with callcentres and back-office jobs like accounting — has today spread to include high-end product design work and even packaging and graphic designs . As manufacturers look at reducing costs and product development cycles, India is fast emerging as the new-age design board for MNCs.

The result: MNCs like Whirlpool, GE, LG, Philips and Bosch are setting up research and design centres in India. And some others like Reckitt are offshoring design work to Indian design houses.

“Outsourcing design jobs to India started in a small way, but is going to be big. This is the latest trend in the world of manufacturing. Microsoft Fires up Free Tools for Developers

Microsoft on Thursday launched its WebsiteSpark programme, intended to encourage web developers to use the company's tools and technologies.

Like the startup-focused BizSpark, and the student and educational DreamSpark, WebsiteSpark gives small web design companies 'no upfront cost' access to Microsoft tools and technologies for three years, with companies paying just $100 (£61.81) to participate at the end of that period.

"We're hoping to enrol agencies that have had little or no contact with Microsoft," said William Coleman, WebsiteSpark lead for the UK, when describing Microsoft's plans for the programme.

Unlike BizSpark, which is restricted to new businesses building on Microsoft technologies, WebsiteSpark has a more open approach, and any design house with fewer than 10 employees is eligible, Coleman noted. "There's a lot of trust in this," he said, noting that the only commitment participants need to make is to deploy one website on Windows technologies within the first six months.

Taken separately, the tools in the programme would cost a lot more than $100 over three years. Companies get access to Microsoft's web design and development tools, with three licences of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, two of Microsoft Expression Web 3 and one of Microsoft Expression Studio 3.

Web Design Tips: Combining jQuery Effects and Plugins For A Great Marketing Effect

The lightweight (small file size) and concise jQuery library makes it relatively easy to add interactive effects and merchandising to just about any ecommerce website.

In this edition of "Web Design Tips," I will quickly show you how to combine a few jQuery effects and the jCarousel jQuery plugin to create a merchandising section near the top of a sample page. This merchandising section will show four products at a time and slide to the left, revealing additional products every three seconds. When a visitor aims his mouse pointer at one of the product images, the slider will stop and display a brief product description for that item.

For the example in the video, I used Jan Sorgalla's excellent jCarousel plugin.

To start, I downloaded the most recent version of the plugin (version 0.2.3 at the time) and got a zip file full of great stuff—CSS, a couple of images, and three JavaScript files, including the jQuery library version 1.2.3.

The most recent version of jQuery at the time of writing was version 1.3.2, but unfortunately jCarousel did not function as expected when I tried to use it with the newest jQuery library. This incompatibility is not a huge problem, but can come into play if we were making use of other plugins or effects that specifically relied on the newer version of the jQuery JavaScript library

Website Design Tips Using Photoshop CS4

Web design is one of those areas that, when done right, you just know it. The finished site looks refined and well done—it pops! There are a number of ways that you can achieve this by polishing off your design in Photoshop. Here we look at some of the ways to do just that.

[LAY OUT THE FUNDAMENTALS]
Before you go about making your website pop, you must first have your fundamentals in place. By this stage you should have done the research, laid out your website appropriately, and done most of the basic design work—but you haven’t applied the polish. In the following example, we’re going to look at some techniques used for a chocolate delivery website; however, these same techniques can be applied to any website.
[CHECK ALIGNMENT AND SPACING]
Alignment and spacing in website design creates order, organizes the page, and groups parts of the website for easy navigation. In the screenshot above you can see the guidelines in place ensuring everything is aligned (the grid is from www.960.gs). Notice how the logo and all of the text is left aligned? Also take note of the even spacing around the boxes and text. Use guides in Photoshop to ensure all of your elements are aligned. To add a guide to your document, drag it from one of your rulers (press Command-R [PC: Ctrl-R] to turn rulers on).
[APPLY ANTI-ALIASING TO TEXT]
Something that’s often overlooked when designing for the Web is anti-aliasing text. For those who don’t know, anti-aliasing is the technique of minimizing distortion artifacts. There are a few ways to minimize this distortion in your text but the best way is to make use of the anti-aliasing options in your Options Bar (or Character panel). You can choose between None, Sharp, Crisp, Strong, and Smooth. Experiment to see what works best, as different fonts and sizes will yield different results; however, the Sharp setting usually prevails in most cases.

Speculative work. In its strictest interpretation, this refers to any project that's undertaken with no guarantee that you'll be paid. Many web designers think this is a very bad thing indeed, driving down fees, devaluing the profession and encouraging a culture of poor design.

Others think it gives them a way to get their work seen, building their web design portfolio and democratising the design process. To decide which side of the divide you fall, it's best to know exactly what is meant by 'spec work'.

The circumstances in which the description might apply are many – from pitching creative work all the way up to doing freebies for charity. That's quite a range, with some practices more prevalent and less maligned among the anti-spec work lobby than others. Let's take a look at those definitions and the arguments that go with them.

Credentials pitching, the creative equivalent of prepping for a job interview, is on the very bottom rung of the spec work ladder. Sure, it takes time to sort out your portfolio, tailor your presentation and attend a meeting, but few of us would begrudge the fact that a new client might want some face time before actually signing up for your services. How To Set A Price For Web Design Work

If you're first starting out as a freelance Web Designer, you need to think about how much you're going to charge, and how exactly you'll charge. But before you quote a price, you need to take a few things into consideration.

* What is the project?

Before you evaluate any Web design project, you need to determine what it will entail. Some questions to ask include:

How many pages will need to be created?
Are there images and/or design that need to be used, or will they be created as part of the project?
Is there content for the site, or will that be written by the designer?
Will there be any Flash, multimedia, programming or scripting required?
Depending on the answer to those questions may raise your prices.
When do your clients want the proejct completed.

The more urgent a project is, the more you can generally charge. But be sure that if you agree to an accelerated schedule, that it's one you can meet.

How much experience do you have?
The more Web design experience you have, the more you can charge, and the more your clients will expect to pay. Keep in mind, however that if you don't have a lot of Flash experience and that's what your clients want, you shouldn't rely on your six years of HTML coding to increase your prices.
How much long-term maintenance is required?
Often, when a Web site is commisioned, the clients have not thought beyond just getting the page up on the site. As a Web designer, you should make sure that your clients have maintenance covered. If they expect you or your company to cover it, you should probably get a separate contract for that aspect of the job.
What is the going rate?
This can often be difficult to determine. The best way is to talk to other designers in your area. Check out the salary and pricing Web sites in the sidebar for more assistance.
How much do you want to make?
The bottom line, after everything else is: how much do you want to make? For example, you might have a project you would love to do, because it would be fun, or interesting or challenging.

Your bid might reflect that. On the other hand, you might feel uncomfortable doing a job or would have to do extra work just to complete it, such as if you would have to hire a database programmer to complete the project.

Some General Rules of Thumb

Never bid on a project you do not have the resources to complete. If you assume that you'll be able to hire a Perl programmer when you make the bid, chances are you'll be scrambling 2 days before the due date and spend all your fee on a last minute programmer.
Get as clear and specific a contract as possible. If the contract is vague, you may find yourself providing more services than you expected.
Be careful with pro bono work. There are many good reasons to build Web sites for free, but you should treat your pro bono work as seriously as any other contract. And if you give away your services, your customers might not want to pay after the free period is over, even if they like your quality.
Always be honest with your clients. If you say you can meet a deadline, then meet it, and if you can't give them as much warning as you possibly can.

Is It Time to “Just Say No” to Internet Explorer 6?

As web workers, sometimes we have to walk a fine line between keeping clients happy, and providing the best possible services. For web developers like me, the issue of whether to continue supporting Internet Explorer 6 is becoming a major headache.

It would seem to be a no-brainer to ditch support for a browser that is slow, prone to malware attacks, and incompatible with modern standards. Those of us who design and maintain web sites have to resort to all sorts of time-consuming (thus expensive!) tricks to make the sites we create work with IE6 — a browser that is now almost nine years old.

Unfortunately, up to a quarter of web users still use IE6, and in big companies, the percentage is even higher. According to Forrester Research, “60 percent of companies use Internet Explorer 6 as their default browser.”

There have been a few “kill IE6″ sites for a while, but a new one, “IE6 No More“, is getting attention thanks to some very high-profile backers. They’ve come up with some simple code for insertion into web sites that I think is prominent without being obnoxious.

Adding an interactive accordion widget to your ecommerce site can provide a great design feature that conveys professionalism and makes your content more readable.

There are plenty of instances in website design when we would like to have a lot of content on a page, but, unless you are creating articles or blog posts, too much text causes the pages to scroll, which makes the content less readable.

As an example, imagine that you have a product detail page with a product description, product image, 20 or more customer reviews, washing and care instructions, inventory availability, related products, and shipping options. That can be a lot of text on a page type (i.e. a contact page or even a product detail page) that does not usually scroll well. So how do you manage all of that copy?

One solution is to use what designers call an accordion, which simultaneously shows some bit of content while hiding other content. You can think of it as a vertical tab.

When there are No More IP Addresses

CHENNAI: The ‘dotcom’ industry, which has evolved gracefully into an indispensable business channel in emerging economies after its boom and bust phase, may be at yet another cross roads at the start of this decade. The reason is that the unique IP addresses allotted to websites are peaking at a number of 4 billion globally, and at just 3 million in India. The IPV4 standard of addressing can accommodate only a finite number of IP addresse, which are estimated to be exhausted by 2011-12.

An IP (internet protocol) address, otherwise known as web address, is the unique identification number given to each web space allocated to a particular individual or corporation. The international standard of addressing for this is IPV4 (internet protocol version 4), which allows a finite number of addresses only.

Taking stock of the situation, an alternate system of addressing named IPV6 has been under development for over a decade now. This system is structured in such a way that it allows infinite number of URLs to be allocated. However, despite a clear indication of exhaustion of IP addresses under IPV4, IPV6 deployment remains below 1% globally and near zero in India.

In fact, Sify is the only web service provider which has converted to IPV6 in India, apart from research networks. “Web clients, servers and internet service providers (ISPs) will much rather look at deployment of alternate technologies to circumvent the addressing problem than attempt a complete overhaul of standards,” said Verisign India vice president Shekhar Kirani. “IPV6 deployment stands at a mere 0.45% in the US and 0.24% in China.”

Incidentally, China beat the United States in the amount of web traffic it attracts in Q1 of 2009-10, at 27.59% of global traffic, compared to US’ 22.15%. The growth in traffic YoY has been at 43% from 19.3% last year, whereas US’ has fallen by a marginal 7% from 22.85%.

Annoying Website Design

Have you ever considered that your website may be annoying? When it’s comes to website design, knowing what visitors hate most is a must, unless you don’t want them to visit you again. This article describes what you should exclude from your website. If you know about an annoying website, feel free to send this article to its webmaster.

A few weeks ago I received an email from a colleague asking me to check one of the website he had developed. He is a web designer and his client wanted a nice attractive flash header. The flash header was great. You can’t miss it at all. Some nice graphics elements were flying in while sound effects created just the right atmosphere. However, after starting to explore the website, the header became very annoying because every time you clicked on the website the header restarted. What was pleasant initially became very annoying very quickly, disturbing your concentration and making it difficult to read what was on the page.

He is not the first to create what I like to call – "annoying website design". Many webmasters, especially new webmasters are totally “in love” with their ideas and tend to go overboard with their design in one way or another. It’s nice to have an attractive header, but is it really necessary to assault the visitor’s mind with it? In my opinion, absolutely not!

Webmasters sometimes forget that their website design should send a message to the visitor that should reflect the website topic and not the programmer’s skill level.

Is Your Website Design Annoying?

Well…. It’s not that hard to be annoying. However, some webmasters are much better than others at annoying their visitors. Check my top 5 list and decide for yourself whether you have been annoying your visitors.

Background music – Unless you are operating an online internet radio station or sell music CDs, why play a midi/wav file in the background continuously on every page?
Huge font size – If you are designing a website for people with a disability then you are doing the right thing, but if not then you are shouting. People don’t like it when someone shouts at them.
Small font size – Do you want to be heard? Keep a normal tone, don’t shout but "speak" in a reasonable volume.
Overlapping layers – Layers can be very useful up to the point. But not when they are being used to put an annoying message in the visitor’s face. Don’t try to force your visitor to read your messages. Try persuasion instead of brute force.
Popup windows – Even though popup windows are now blocked by many add on tools, webmasters keep using them. The annoying part of popups is sometimes we actually miss important information because of those anti popup tools. Haven't you heard the old phrase "if you can’t beat him, join him”? Don’t use pop up windows. Put your important messages in a central place on your website.

Most likely each one of us has our own private top five lists. You probably have many more annoying design cases in mind. Well, you’re right, the list is much longer then that. I just wanted to describe some of the highlights in order to bring this important subject your attention.

Some of you are probably reading those lines and smiling while some others have a feeling a deja-vu. Keep in your mind that as a webmaster the last thing you want to do is put lots of effort into your website and then find out that your visitors hate it. It's not a matter of taste, it's more about being the same polite person we all try to be when we go to a party.

I tried to point out a few things that might be useful to some web designers and webmasters. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to send this article to my friend, hopefully he’ll send it to his client :)

Could Firefox 3.5 Spark a Web Design Boom?

One feature of Firefox's new version allows the browser to display any font. Here's how good-looking the results can be.

Mozilla recently released version 3.5 of its browser, Firefox, and it contained one tiny feature that could be a huge boon for web design: The ability to display any font, thanks to "@font-face," which allows designers to store fonts on their own servers, and reference them on their web pages. Designers Ian Lynam and Craig Mod have just posted a primer on the new feature, which shows just how much is possible. (A screencap of the primer is pictured above.)

If you have Firefox 3.0 but not 3.5, update now to see how dramatic the page looks, before and after. Previously, web designers who couldn't bear the thought of compromising on their type have relied on Flash or Javascript--which are, of course, clunky and annoying. @font-face is miles more elegant.

Safari has offered @font-face linking ever since version 3.1; Opera, meanwhile, has announced that the protocol will be supported in its next version. Internet Explorer, of course, is waaaaaay behind.

With a second style sheet and minor changes to a page's HTML, many online stores can offer an excellent mobile shopping experience without creating a second web page or registering a mobile specific domain.

Mobile Internet use is on the rise. And online merchants presumably want to provide customers with the best possible shopping experience. It is for these reasons that many leading ecommerce sites have begun to offer either mobile specific pages (typically a subdomain) or mobile specific styles.

In this "Web Design Tips," I am going to make some suggestions about whether you should build a separate, mobile specific website, and provide a quick example of how you might transform your CSS to create a more mobile-friendly version of your current page.
Should You Build a Separate Mobile Site?

The answer can be either yes or no. Personally, I believe that mobile Internet devices and mobile handsets will soon be as capable of rendering web pages as well as laptops and desktops do now, so that registering a .mobi domain or even building a separate site could be a waste of time.

A better solution might be to redesign your current site so that it is easy to render on multiple platforms. In fact, developing websites that easily migrate among platforms (mobile, desktop, RSS, or more) was the one of the main reasons that CSS was created. Good website design will largely separate content from layout and appearance.

If you do decide that the best way to serve mobile customers is with a mobile-specific site, I will encourage you to use a subdomain rather than a .mobi domain. For example the URL might be http://m.yoursite.com rather than http://yoursite.mobi.

Description:

We are New Delhi; India based organization looking for qualified and experienced service provider for our requirement of Web based Application Development. This application needs to be designer for students for their prospected Employment, Exams and Training. Contract will be for 3 years.

Scope of Service:
A) This application is designed to improve the employable skills to current students of India. We want to test the skills of students and employees with the help of this software on different levels like foundation levers and up-graduations.
B) Service provider needs to design online courses as per our instructions. Users should be able to register, access them and give online exams and view their score. We should be able to view registered users, application received for training and other information.
C) Application should have admin back-end to control whole application. We should be able to design and change course work and other necessary from admin back-end. Application should be designed as Content Management System.
D) Service provider needs to initially provide data entry service for 200000 (2 Lac) students into application. This should be completed within 3 months.
E) Service provider needs to take necessary back-ups of application on regular intervals.

We are looking for the best proposals and payment terms are negotiable. Interested service providers are requested to contact us on or before 15:00 Hrs on July 20, 2009 via post, courier or hand delivery only. EMD (Refundable) is required of 1000000 INR. This tender is Global and offsite. Provider may have to visit our location for meetings and briefings.
